Oh my god
hes getting ready for world youths
can't judge this year's prospects on historical results, esp for an aging athlete. Maybe he'll make it, but i think the odds are long.
at 2013 XC Nationals, some guy who claimed to be a coach said Allen Webb would win the race. I said he wouldn't get top 10...this guy then proclaimed that "Webb is our best middle distance guy."
i said, 'you mean WAS.' Boy, the guy wanted to swing at me.
Webb in his day was an absolute monster. Come 2008, he was fifth in the Trials 1500 final, and 2012 was a bigger disaster. At XC nationals that day, I think he ended up 20th. Should've bet the guy.
Same thing with Angelo Taylor getting the relay anchor leg in London 20102. He was leading the IH coming out of the turn, then struggled. Even with that hard evidence, the coaches put him on the last leg in the 4x4, and he faded out of the turn. Great career, great competitor, but not at his peak anymore. This is why i don't like Rick Suhr's notion that prime athletes should get a free pass onto the team. Nope, deal with the pressure like every other kid who has Olympic dreams, and produce at the Trials...or go home.

People on here LOVE to doubt KD, Manzano and Symmonds - but they tend to always prove the doubters wrong MANY times.
Nick Symmonds was 2nd at the World Championships in 2013, 3 seasons ago. He left the OTC and his coach after that season. In the time since then, how many decent races has he had? I'd say one, when he won USA's last year. The doubters have been right about Symmonds a lot more than they've been wrong the last 3 seasons.
So... he's barely faster than a bunch of high schoolers.
2 things:
Sowinski won that race from what I could tell and the big thing about Nick race was that he went out in 4th place at the 200. His race tactics totally changed. If he gets out fast and can still do his usual kick, he will be tough to beat

Sowinski was second
Nobody would ever confuse me with a Symmonds fan but until the race is run you can not count him out. But if I were going to put down a bet on which 3 go to Rio he would not be one of them.
At this point I'd take Berian and Sowinski but the third spot is a question mark right now. Walker and Solomon have 1:45 and 1:45.5 this year.

In related news, Clayton Murphy scratched out of NCAAs today. Considering his favored status for the 800 title, that indicates a serious injury. He has been considered a serious contender for the team.
Where did you see this?
I won't be shocked to see him kicking home for the win at the Olympic Trials in 1:44ish. I don't get the hate.
My sentiments exactly! LOL

Wow if he keeps improving half a second every 4 days he'll be in world record shape by July!
"Sowinski: 1:47.22 in Shanghai -> 1:45.80 in Beijing
That's a 1.42 second improvement."
If he keeps this up, he'll be way ahead of WR pace by the Trials.

Symmonds is waaaayyy to old for World Youths and he'd still finish DFL
How are Nick and Paris Hilton doing these days? Never hear about their relationship anymore.
It's May. It would be no surprise if he dropped a 1:45 3 weeks from now.
According to the workouts he posts on Sweat, he spent the winter and spring training like a 15:30 5km runner. I'm suprised he ran 1:47.
Did anyone read his 2012 log and this year's training posted to Sweat? Are they similar? I doubt very much they are since he ran 3:35 or so for 1500m that year.
The training he needs to go from 1:47 to 1:44 will really test his aging body.
I watch a replay of the race on BeinSports.
Symmonds looked really bad. He was okay until just before the first lap then he started to fade badly and either gave up (never a good sign) or just didn't have the wheels anymore.
Sowinski could be the new white hope for 800M runners. he looked good but you have to peak for trials.
