Hopefully Salazar learned from his mistakes.
I do think that the 6 X Mile after a race was crazy. But they apparently got away with it!

Rupp will end up as Salazar. Hit a permanent wall where the running system in his body breaks down completely. Ryan Hall suffered the same breakdown.
Will he set the AR in the marathon before hitting said wall? You know, like Salazar?
An AR on a short course, then.
No trouble in NOPland...

You very well could be right, but Salazar has been building up Rupp consistently and steadily for a LONG time. Maybe (a big maybe) Rupp is the blueprint for how to safely increase to that mileage without losing effectiveness.
Or, both Rupp and Salazar may be acknowledging the fact that this is their last chance for a gold medal, and they're going all out to peak in August, even if that means Rupp will be shot by 2017.

Yes, Rupp runs underwater while holding his breath and thus minimizing oxygen use. His body has responded by building up gills at the back side of his ears. Although his ears has become a little elf-like his oxygen uptake has more than doubled. Another benefit is that Salazar can judge Rupp's shape by observing his gills. If a transparent liquid (aka "The Clear") starts dripping from the gills, he knows that Rupp is in peak shape.
Yeah just saw that article. Pretty amazed he was at 145 mph but makes more since now that he is doing marathon training.

You act like Salazar and Hall had terrible careers. I think most runners would trade their careers in a second to be Salazar and/or Hall.

Rupp has already had a long career. If the heavy training breaks him down he still has his past to live on. The point about the very high mileage, besides Rupp having a high mileage odometer already, is that it appears as the time is short achieve, so go for broke.
Excellent thread. Excellent points. Who is right? I dunno. What seems likely: if Rupp holds up and gets through the training well, he will be a FORCE in Rio. God bless him. Wish I were where he is. The guy is just a flat-out machine.
i'm pretty sure that 6 x mile after the marathon was an April Fool's joke by Letsrun

He's talking about the one at BU after his 2 mile AR in 2014.

As are the worthless drivels of Rupp Haters.
Phrasing of words means everything. Yes, I would trade my career in a second for the career of a Salazar or Hall. But I would not trade my very mediocre career to be Salazar or Hall. No thanks.
The Oregon Project Mary Cain has withdrawn from the 1,500.
"She's not ready to race," Salazar said.
What no follow up question there Goe?! Great reporting.

That was a 5*mile

Just bumping this up.. The headline to the article is, "Alberto Salazar says Galen Rupp is fine, running 140 miles per week"
Ken Goe wrote:
Nike Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar said not to read anything into Galen Rupp's withdrawal from the 5,000 meters at Friday's Hoka One One Middle Distance Classic at Occidental College.
"Galen is fine," Salazar said. "He's running 145 miles per week."
Salazar said 115 of the miles "are at full weight, outside or on his regular treadmill."
The rest are on an underwater treadmill.
I respect Salazar's decision. He knows what he is doing. If any American is at the right point in their career to train 145 mpw, then Rupp doing it as a 10k silver medalist at age 29 after a long aerobic b while training for the marathon under Salazar's watchful eye is certainly at the right point for it.
Looks like AlSal didn't want Galen to embarrass himself against speedsters like Jenkins. Oxy = NOT Rupp Certified
Editor's note: THsi thread was initially titled, "Trouble in NOPland? Rupp SCRATCHES the 5000m at Oxy" and was worried about Galen Rupp's fitness as he scratched from Oxy. Ken Goe then published an article saying Rupp is doing well which you can read here:
http://www.oregonlive.com/trackandfield/index.ssf/2016/05/alberto_salazar_says_galen_rup_1.html
We merged the two threads together and changed the title to reflect the new info.
One wondering whether Rupp was in trouble and then the one where Goe said all is well.
