The Justice Department is now investigating Russian doping. The investigation is by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn that has been investigating FIFA.

This puts some real resources behind any investigation.
And before anyone else brings it up, American dopers should be investigated and busted also.

The United States attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York is scrutinizing Russian government officials, athletes, coaches, antidoping authorities and anyone who might have benefited unfairly from a doping regime
I'm not sure what the point of this exercise would be other than to finally put some Americans in legal trouble.
The inquiry stops at Uncle Phil's house and no one goes in. -

I'm not convinced that there's a doping "regime" in the United States that is anything like as organized as doping in Russia, but I have no doubt that there are American dopers who get an unfair benefit. Regardless, dopers in the US and elsewhere need legal consequences because they are stealing from clean athletes. -

What does 'benefitted unfairly' from a doping regime mean?
So is the Justice Department going to investigate Gatlin, A Rod, the NY Yankees, the Red Sox, Nike, etc? -
Can the Russians investigate Amercian doping then?

I don't think there would be a structure in the US such as there exists in Russia which seems centralized. The US can certainly have a regime, but much more segmented, harder to nail down. There could be other variables as well. No one knows until all is fully investigated. -

As opposed to benefiting within the rules from a doping regime (e.g., from prescribed thyroid or androgen, 2015 meldonium, or any drug taken prior to a suspension). -
Someone explain to me how the US Justice Dept has jurisdictional authority to pursue this? Wouldn't they have better case if they pursued Nike and Lance Armstrong?

For the Russians it could be seizure of assets for entities involved in wire fraud or FCPA, depending on the details. Indirectly, it is a problem for anyone who facilitated cheating for them.
This investigation could lead into a lot of directions and Americans could be impacted if the fact finding gets that far. I would be interested to see what they can expose about corruption and the means.

Thank you. -
try what u.s did in geneva in russia and rightly end up in bodybags.
info unlawfully obtained anyways.
why u.s interest? -
The US has been pointing the finger at the Russians for 40 years to deflect attention from its filthy sprint corps. Start moaning about doping when Gay, Gatlin and Rodgers are banned from the trials.
