UNC approving plan to decimate and maybe eliminate the Track program

I was waiting for that. None, of course. That was apparently a couple of football and basketball players making the rest of us look bad. I double majored in psych and exercise sports science, and was two classes short of a Spanish minor. I worked very hard, as did most of the other track and cross country athletes. That's kind of the point here--they're pushing people like me out in favor of the not so impressive football players? Come on...

I thought the whole cheating scheme was set up for women's basketball players and XC, not football and men's basketball players????

So they're going to build a building on Fetzer Field? In that case, what's the plan for the soccer field/teams (because that tends to move the needle at UNC a bit more than track)?

So then and now you were a 3rd rate athlete at UNC. Weren't important enough to have someone take your tests for you and now they steal your track.

That sucks man. Not much else to say. I guess you could email the current coach and see if there is anything the alumni could do? Although when you're competing with those tasty football dollars... :\

Loving these people who are probably attending community college mocking Chapel Hill. Great school, opens a lot of doors as you know a decade later.

Also, I was intrigued and went to the UNC website -- while you do a good job of hosting indoor meets with regularity, here's the last 10 years of outdoor meets at Chapel Hill --

2006-07 to 2010-11 -- three meets a year

2011-12 -- 1

2012-13 -- 2

2013-14 -- 2

2014-15 -- 1

2015-16 -- 1

Now, perhaps that is something handed down from on high (you are sharing the field during the spring with lacrosse), and it may also be a coincidence that you've had a new coaching staff during the drawdown. But if you don't use the track for track meets, you can't be too surprised if they decide to do something else with the real estate.

I plan to write a letter to the Athletic Department and Chancellor Folt informing them that they can count on no further donations from me if they go through with this plan to replace the track with an indoor football practice facility. I encourage all alumni who feel similarly to do the same.

I'm sure she'll get right on it and put that right in the circular file.

Why are you still giving money to the University after this athletic scandal? I reluctantly gave to the University until last year. Once the University went on SACS probation for this crap, that was it. No more money until they get their priorities straight.

Are you sure you don't need help writing that letter? Please let me know. Perhaps you can set up a fake letter writing campaign and you can enlist the help of a professor to just say wrote letters.

No need. Just like all the other papers submitted by athletes at UNC, no one will read it and some secretary will slap an A+ on it.

Same thing has already happened at the University of Minnesota...it's ridiculous they tore down the outdoor track there.

A grossly excessive emphasis on football and basketball is combining with Title IX to drastically pare back "non-revenue" sports, especially for men.

This problem has been going on for a while at colleges with less prominent athletic programs than Carolina. It's apparently working it's way up.

This is good news for the Boston College Eagles. Might be able to score a couple points at a future ACC meet.

That's what happens when your athletes don't have to go to class.

No. This is what happens when you have revenue sports inside a non-profit system.

Good thing the NCAA was so harsh on UNC for years-long wholesale education fraud.

Unless alumni donations are affected by banishing T&F, it's on the long, slow, road to complete dismemberment.

You mean like changing the name of the AFAM Dept? That's quite a "reform" the administration is boasting about. Why even include some of those "reforms" on the website. It just makes it look even worse.
