I've worked at a university for 11 years now as faculty, and several years before as staff, in 3 different states. IT's always the same... every year tons of frosh gals come to college with boyfriends and promise rings.... and guys come to school with pics of the hot gal from back home... then over Thanksgiving and Winter break, they make it official and end the relationships. Over/under, I'd say the odds are 90/10 you break up by Christmas next year. That said, there are some folks who make it, and heck, I have a friend who dated long distance all through college, got married after, and they're celebrating their 20 year anniversary soon. So who knows, it's all in the couple as many have said.
I do think your ultra distance will make it harder than the folks who are are 1-2 hrs away. You'll both be having different experiences, different friends... the person who said to grow the relationship you have to spend 2 hrs a night on the phone which is not good for academics or you college experience is right.
If you want to go to college with the GF still "official" try it. No harm, no foul. If you break up over the holidays after first semester, so be it, and if you don't , that's fine too. Assuming yall don't have shared credit cards/phone bills/etc at this point in your life, the "leaving penalty" is low, so do what makes you happy.
