We have had mixed success at my school because the kids will not run during the summer. I am not allowed to coach them at all during the off season.
Unfortunately I am not able to get on the Track & Field staff as the football team has a monopoly on that. Those guys also kill my kids with interval training and way too many races during the season. Many of the kids are injured for much of the Track & Field season.
What I do during the early part of CC season is have them do a lot of long runs, recovery runs, and speed development sessions of 80 meter sprints or less. But we have to start doing interval training three weeks into the season because our season is only 13 weeks long.
So most seasons we are playing catch up to the teams that run 1000 miles during the summer. How can I as a coach compete with that?
