No system is "fair", get the F*CK over it.
The whole point of a trials system is that it is based on actual performance in an actual race. That is fair. If you can't perform, you don't go. In a trials system, political and personal influence and extraneous factors besides athletic ability are eliminated.
The argument against a trials system is always that the best person might have an off day, be injured, etc. and a selection committee can take that into account. But presumably, the goal of the selection committee is to pick the best athletes, which AK did not do. So the result is neither fair to better athletes who were not chosen, and did not result in the best possible team.
