My neighbor was a very good high school female sprinter and for some reason her parents did not particularly support her track endeavors.
I attended the local Northern Virginia district meet as a favor to her (she babysat my daughters from time to time).
I watched the boys two mile and saw Alan Webb run a 60 second last lap to beat a future NCAA cross country All American. This as a ninth grader. (I ran 9:20 decades ago for the two mile as a 9th grader and had more than a casual fan's appreciation for how talented he was. I turned to my wife and said that is the next high school 4:00 minute miler. Of course, I was wrong - he became much better than a mere 4:00 minute miler - he just had the wheels. It was a great moment for me as a track fan.
