Hunter was dying at FLN. He's a miler, and 5k is too long for him.
However, speaking of the mile:
Slagowski ran 1:48 and 3:59 by himself.
Could Hunter do that??? NO
Hunter did enough to win at Footlocker. After Footlocker, people were saying he wouldn't break 4 or 8:40. He should have quieted them with his 7:59 and 3:57, but I guess not. It's a ridiculous belief that Hunter is a pure miler, and I'm not talking about form beauty. He ran 14:20 on a 5k XC course--an accurately measured one. He ran 14:26 on another XC course--this one was lengthened to be a full 5k. He ran an 8:53 2 mile as a 10th grader at NBN, when his mile PR was only 4:10. Last year, he wasn't as good a miler as Grant Fisher (who himself appears to be more 3k/5k), but won their 2 mile showdown at Brooks in 8:42 with a 4:14 last mile and a 54 last 400--not because he's a speedster, but because he was more aerobically fresh going into the last lap.
Both of these athletes are fantastic. There's no need to trash either of them. They have their different strengths. Slagowski has incredible speed and might be even more promising at the 800 than the mile. Hunter has incredible endurance and good speed, and is probably more promising at the 3k/5k than the mile.
