3 is just a bit too few. 5 would be too many. 4 is ideal. Perhaps it could be the Iron Medal, or whatever.

No.
5 would be better, to balance the podium.
Gold, Silver, Bronze, Frankincense, and Myrrh.
3 for the 100-400
4 for 800/1500
5 for 3kstp-marathon
Except in the Olympics, figure skating goes four deep in every competition. Fourth place is pewter.
Actually sometimes 4 medals are awarded. For example, when 2 high jumpers tie for 3rd.

Without any math to back me I'll say in the sprints first and fourth are much closer to being statistically similar that first and fourth are in distance races.
The gold medal is not real gold, just gold-plated. If first prize is fake, it's a joke no matter what they do.
A more affordable option would be to use hats. First place gets a tall top hat. Second place gets a wide-brimmed sombrero. Third gets a beret. If there's a fourth place, use a baseball cap.
Sounds like an idea Paul Krugman would have to attract more attention to the sport

Rose gold.
All athletes should get a medal. It hurts their feelings if they don't get a medal. How are we supposed to feel warm inside when we hear all the horrible things the white man has done to all these athletes. Why Pistorious should have just been given the Gold to make us feel warm inside. Maybe he would have felt better about himself and not killed and shot three people.

You've just convinced me that we should stick with 3
Do they have finishers medals and t-shirts for the Olympic Marathon like they do at the Olympic Trials?
3 medals is good.
However, I do think they should better recognize top 8 like in most track meets.

Yes, they give awards for discus too. Is there anything you want us to discuss?

The top 8 actually receive Olympic Diplomas

"in fourth place... with a medal donated by LetsRun..."
because you're all always about the fourth place who never medaled but coulda woulda shoulda won gold, am I right?
