Confusing article. He ran track and cross country at Indiana, also went to the Naval Academy?

RIP. Thank you for your service.
But lets keep talking about Prince... smh with this backwards country. -
IU Hoosier from 04-06ish. On one of the very good Chapman teams (Haas, Jefferson's). By all accounts a great guy. Really sorry to hear about this. Thoughts and prayers to family, friends and teammates.

Why'd they mention the grandfather? The media is a joke. They don't care about people and their families, just about inciting shallow perspectives and getting money.

"Mission accomplished."
Thanks Obama!
Sincerely, though condolences and what a waste. -

While what you say might be somewhat true, the authors would have been remiss in not mentioning the family connection. After all, the website is "government news" and Keating was a pretty big piece of the financial scandal that rocked the country in the 80's -

Agreed, poorly written article. How did he jump from IU to the Naval Academy is my biggest question, but absolutely they should mention the prominent man he was named after. Raises more questions than answers. And why was he even there (in Iraq) as Obama said years ago we were clearing out of the Middle East. Why is the media so soft on him? What a poor legacy he leaves and hopefully the truth will come out some day about O-bum-ma. -

Then later in the article his coach says he left IU to ENLIST to become a SEAL. You do not go to the Naval Academy to enlist in the Navy. -
I didn't know Anapolis accepted transfers, confusing. And aren't most Seals enlisted ranks? You would go to Anapolis to become a Seal, you'd just enlist and apply.

I'm perfectly capable of recognizing the contributions that both made, as well are many others in this "backwards country".
RIP. -
You do if you father and grandfather are connected to the McCains

As an enlisted navy man myself, it would be a big surprise if Keating went to the Academy knowing his rank (Chief, which is E-7). SEALs do advance fairly quickly, so assuming he went to boot camp shortly after leaving IU in the spring semester of 2006, this would have been his rough timeline (note, I don't know his specific timeline, this is just an educated guess based on what I know of the SEALs as well as how navy enlisted promotions work. I am also making the assumption that he earned enough college credit to enter as an E-3 and skip a few of the early pay-grades).
August 2006: boot camp (~8 weeks)
October 2006: BUD/S (24 weeks)
April 2007: Jump School (3 weeks)
May 2007: SEAL Qualification Training (26 weeks)
November 2007: Assignment to SEAL team
May 2008: Promotion to E-4
December 2008: Promotion to E-5
December 2011: Promotion to E-6
August 2015: Promotion to E-7.
There is a chance that he promoted quicker based on his evaluations, but there is no chance that he actually went to the academy based on a few factors. Additionally there is now an 8 week BUD/S prep course that is after boot camp, but I do not believe that was around when Keating went thru.
1) He is enlisted, not an officer (which all academy grads are).
2) There is very little wiggle room in the promotion schedule I outlined for him to attend the academy and either fail out or drop.
3) I would be very surprised in the SEALs accepted an academy drop immediately. -

Agreed with Stryker Drilling
Yosemite Sam, surely you NEVER listen to music, because you have no need for artists who have that crazy ability to capture how it is to feel human and let us regular people replay those feeling for a few minutes. NEVER rock out or chill out to any music from here on out, because artists are useless egomaniac freaks and bring no value to our lives! (The fact that Prince was abandoned and abused as a child and could put soul-searing pain to music may or may not help some soldiers (and the rest of us around the globe) who need to rock out or chill out, but hey, forget that.)
Why are you, Yosemite Sam, not talking about my father's service? He was an officer in the Navy? smh
Oh, wait. Soldiers dedicate their lives behind the scenes for our freedom. An artist like Prince has a message for the masses.
But you go on, make your own music. Knock yourself out. Delete Spotify.
And keep connecting random dots while you're at it.
RIP Keating. Thank you for your service. -

I think its clear that the author of the article didn't understand the details and embellished with the wrong terminology. "Enlist in the Navy" became "enrolled in the Naval Academy." -

I believe he graduated BUD/S in '08, meaning he either enlisted closer to '07, or he was rolled during BUD/S. SEAL trainees are automatically promoted to E4 upon completion of BUD/S. -
Mom was an active runner as was Charlie's sister. Don't know if Mom was a Hoosier, but Dad obviously was. Think (?) Mom & Dad divorced when Charlie was fairly young. Remember IU to swimming is what Oregon is to T&F.
Believe a Keating daughter married Gary Hall Sr. (the eye surgeon) who also attended IU (as did swimming greats Don Schollander & Mark Spitz). Hall Sr. was Olympic silver medallist (1972?). Don't know if Gary Hall Jr. attended IU.
When the news story first broke and only the name was mentioned, I immediately thought of the Phoenix HS runner. Seemed like a nice kid by all accounts. Sincerest condolences to the family. -

FWIW, Gary Hall Jr. attended UT Austin.
