Could doing a local 5K and going all out every weekend take the place of speed work? There's not much recovery time required for such a short race, and you can get back to your regular training pretty quickly. I'm fairly new to running and have been running with some local folks that are training for triathalon races and various marathons, they do no speed work and very seldom race, they seem to be content with endless training and just plodding along to the finish of the few races they do, personally I'd rather race as often as I can.
