I'd guess something to do with money, lobbyists.
Why you car bout seatbelt. You no speak english.
In my state they repealed the motorcycle helmet law, so you could be on the side of the road getting a seatbelt ticket, while helmetless motorcycle riders whiz by unimpeded.
Makes no sense.
Because it's the law. Look up "rule of law".
seatbelts would be dangerous for motorcyclists, hence no laws requiring them. the laws aren't there to annoy you, they're there to save your life.
imagine you're in a motorcycle crash and you tip over. wearing a seatbelt, you'd either be crushed by the bike, or at least one leg would. without a seatbelt (if you're wearing proper gear) you fall off and slide. you maybe get some road rash but you don't lose a leg

No helmet laws are stupid. Just as stupid as no seat belt laws would be.
There is some benefit to riding a motorcycle, there is no benefit, personal or social, for not wearing a seatbelt.
Drive a bus. You don't get a ticket for riding in a bus without a seatbelt.
I think it's a dumb law. If I want to be stupid and risk my life by not wearing a seatbelt (or helmet) then that's my choice. The government doesn't make laws about how much ice cream I can eat or beer I drink does it??............ wrote:

It's illegal to drive without a seatbelt because an accident might occur. Meanwhile, smoking is legal even though it is actively killing you and will eventually if something else doesn't first. This doesn't make sense. Not logically anyway ... it does makes sense when you consider how much money/influence the Tobacco company has.
Your argument sounds good and all, until you consider how much more money taxpayers have to pay to rehabilitate your paraylzed butt since you didn't bother wearing a seatbelt.
The insurance companies have very good lobbyists. If they could figure a way to put a seatbelt on a motorcycle, then it'd be mandatory too. Anything not to pay a claim.

You have to wear a seatbelt because the Emergency Room won't turn you away even if you are uninsured. Seatbelt laws protect my wallet from your stupidity. The whole "saving your life" thing is just a happy side effect.

It's because the white trash bikers show up for legislative hearings or intimidate legislators who propose helmet laws. Saw it here in New Hampshire (no helmet law) in person. Even this vegged out guy who bounced his head off the highway and is no useless showed up for a hearing to oppose helmet laws. Legislators won't stand up for such laws cause of blowback from bikers. Live free or die, oh hell no, because the rest of us have higher insurance rates covering the dirtbag bikers.
My understanding is that motorcyclists are given the option not to wear a helmet in certain states because if a motorcyclist wears a helmet they are likely to keep some or all of their brain intact while the rest of their body is destroyed and the likely outcome is to become a quadriplegic. Some would rather die than experience that outcome, hence the no-helmet option.
Wearing a seatbelt decreases the likelyhood of death or serious injury.
It cost insurance companies more money in the event of a death or serious injury.
Insurance companies have lobbyists, we don't.

The exact same argument applies to support banning motorcycles though. They really are far more dangerous than driving a car with no seatbelt if you look at the numbers.
Anyone that supports a law requiring citizens to put on a belt or face a fine is a disgusting human being.
Your insurance will go up no matter what. That's what insurance companies do. Everything is going up.
You will go to an emergency room or die no matter what in a severe accident, seat belt or not. WTF?
It's a money maker for law enforcement. That's a major reason why its there.
If they were really concerned about your safety, they would make rear seat belts mandatory, but that would nanny state BS anyway. Could go as far as making untied shoelaces illegal as well.
If someone does not want to wear a damn seatbelt then fine them extra after the event!!
