And therefore, you are not their customer. USATF is all about monetizing the sport, not growing participation/viewers. They are copying the NBA/NFL/MLB where attendance is collapsing, but revenues are up.
Like MLB, no one seems to mind the relevance of the sport is evaporating while other sports (football/soccer) take its place. The revenue is a win for USATF.
All the new money is coming from tv. Once the networks get on the "regular" cable package, they don't have to worry as much about ratings or advertising dollars. They get paid every month regardless and from the majority of people who aren't watching and don't even care about sports. It's brilliant that 90% of their tv income comes from people who have no interest in ever watching.
What I am not seeing is how USATF/runnerspace is going to get a huge % of the population who cares nothing about running to pay them money. There are some runners who will pay but will that be enough to be profitable?
As for your statement about attendance collapsing, that is false. MLB never had attendance top 73 million people until 2005. While it peaked in 07 at 79 million, it has not fallen below 73 million since then. In the 80s, they were around 45 million. In fact, MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL attendance is 3 times HIGHER than any other sports league in the world!! The NBA just set an attendance record last year and has been consistently over 17,000/game for the last 10 years. In the 80s they averaged 10-12k per game. The nfl has been consistently over 17 million since 2008. In the 80s, they were just over 15 million/year.
