Can either of these gents challenge Suzy for the title of Badger GOAT?
Solinsky had a better peak but Teg had the better career. Thoughts on that?

Solinsky should have been a miler. He came out of hs with a 4:03 1600.
At 6'1" 165' he was built for it. In fact perhaps he could have run better at 175 with "a little more speed in dem' legs."
People just do not understand speed in this country. Speed training is not 20 x 200! In addition one must learn the concepts that good sprint coaches teach. Too many college coaches think they know it all. In fact, many hs coaches think that training knowledge ends with them!
Not true.
Career? Teg. But I would take Solinskys over it any day. In 15 years no one will remember Teg, but Beast Mode will still be getting Youtube hits.

AGREED. Thank you.
agreed, it was the most exciting moment in recent US distance running history. Solinsky:
"Entering the event, there was talk of Galen Rupp going after the American record. This being my first-ever 10k, I was obviously a bit unsure whether or not I was quite that fit. It helped that I had raced Rupp many times before and regularly beaten him, so I told myself that if he could run [an American record], I definitely could.
As the race started, I settled in midpack and tried to shut off mentally. I was able to just fall asleep, stay relaxed and cover the moves until about midway, when I picked up a side stitch. I dealt with the cramp for about four laps until it faded. Once it did I began to enter the state of flow. The pace picked up to splits that would normally intimidate me, but in that state I did not even think about it. I was able to respond to every surge because I was focused on doing whatever it took to beat Rupp. With just more than a mile to go, I knew I was going to win; in fact, I was literally licking my chops. I decided I was going to make a move around 800 meters to go. I intended to not only make a move, but to make a statement. As I closed in on the finish line, I had no clue how fast I was running or that I was even close to 27 minutes until about 150 meters to go.
As I took my spikes off, I discovered a blister on my foot the size of a softball. I did not even realize it was there until then."

So the guy who was the first non-african man under 27:00 and the 2nd fastest non african at both 5,000 and 10,000 was really running the wrong event? Really?
No. He's endurance was unreal. The largest margin of victory at Foot Locker ever.
You post may be one of the dumber ones in letsrun history.

It doesn't even make the top 20 thanks to your domination of those spots.
I'm of the mind that Solinsky's 2010 was aided in some way. Regardless of how highly he placed in HS or College, nothing indicated multiple sub 12:56 and sub 27 (with ease). And then a career ending injury. Sounds like the "engine" was too powerful for the chassis.

Cool. I'd take the crapload of international teams instead.
Teg on paper, with his 4th at worlds in the 5000, is better.
But Solinsky has some true bad-boy marks in the 5000. 12:55? That's fast, kids. The 10K PR is darn good too.
A toss-up?
I had high hopes for both to do more, but they did great.
Since "career" is the word I have to go with Teg.
Take away 2010 and Solinsky doesn't come close.
They both excelled at the 5000, primarily.
They both had one year where they went sub 13 (Solinksky did it a three times in that one year)
Teg went under 13:10 in three different years. Sol just the one year.
Teg made a US WC or Olympic team in 3 different years (at 5000m) finishing as high as 4th in a World Championship.
Sol made 1 team and finished 12th.
Teg also finished 3rd in the 2006 World Cup.
In the 10,000 Solinsky had that one great race to become the first American under 27 minutes. But he never ran for the US at 10,000m.
Teg mad 2 US teams in the 10,000 (made the US team in 5 different years in total)
Teg also made at least one senior xc US team (and chose not to race unfortunately).

Solinsky made 2 World teams (2009,2011). He had to withdraw in 2011 with the hamstring injury.
Ok, lets throw out HS. Who cares who was better in HS? I guess a few do, bury thats because they are still in HS (or think they are).
College? Counts a little. Not much. 3 of Solinsky's titles were indoor? Ok, not bad, but it's not the same out outdoor or XC. So, in my book, he has 2. Still good, but less important that what you do later.
As a pro, Solinsky has better times. Not by a whole lot in the 1500-5k, but by a large amount in the 10k. Of course, Teg did not run the 10k until he was on the decline.
American records:1 each, but Solinsky's is in the more important event, and the better achievement by far.
Important races: Teg 2 Olympics and 3 World Champs included a 4th place finish missing 3rd by milliseconds.
Solinsky: 1 WC (12th place).
Also if you count diamond league events, I'm pretty sure Teg has a huge advantage there of decent results.
This is a classic case of times vs placing in the most important events. Those who give preference to time will clearly favor Solinsky. Those who favor events will clearly favor Teg.
Those who put a big emphasis on College (even HS for gods sake) will favor Solinsky. Those who don't will not give that extra weight.
Of course, Solinsky was injured in his prime and the timing of that injury ruined all his changes run more WC and Olympics, and he probably would have and done well had he stayed healthy. But it is what it is. We don't live in a world of shoulda, woulda, coulda. What you actually did is all that counts.
Soilinsky's pro career shined brightly for a short period of time, but then is crashed and burned. He ran great times, but never had great races on the world stage. Teg's lasted a good long time.
I favor Teg.
Teg easily.
PRs basically the same across the board.
However, Teg is far more accomplished.
Solinsky was for the most part, an average runner as a professional. He did get hot for ~1 year. If you remove march 2010 - ~july 2011 from solinsky's career. He would be basically not be relevant as a professional runner.
One year of fast times does not equal to Teg's career.
Teg was basically the guy (pre-Rupp) for 3-4 years.

Solinsky had a better peak but Teg had the better career. Thoughts on that?
This is 100% the correct answer. Teg easily had the better "career" but Solinsky did have the better peak of about 16 months or so.
I think overall Teg had a better pro career. Solinsky had a better college and high school career but he didn't perform at as high of level as Teg for as long of time. But I think at his peak Solinsky was better. I know Teg finished 4th at worlds but that was a highly tactical affair and Teg wasn't actualy the 4th best 5K runner in the world at that time.
As far as best moments Teg has nothing that compares to Solinsky breaking 27 or his duel with Lagat at the US champs. Solinsky got to a level where when he toed the line I believed he could run with any guy out there. Unfortunately that didn't even last a year as injuries killed his career, but I never felt that way about Teg.
Teg. He had a full career at all levels. Talking about how an athlete excelled at the high school/college level is meaningless if they don't do well for whatever reason at the senior/pro level. If you're counting high school/college titles and not counting pro results then to use a baseball analogy, there's a lot of "legendary" baseball players who were failures at the MLB level. Solinsky had a great 2010 season and that is his legacy as a runner, similar to Webb's 2007 season. Nobody considers Webb a "legend," his career was too inconsistent for that. The only recent American runner who might be considered a "legend" is Lagat, if he ever retires.

26:59 and not an Olympian. That has to haunt him.
The crazy thing is that Teg is part of the reason Solinsky isn't an Olympian. During the 2008 5k OT they were supposed to take turns leading the last couple laps and Teg wasn't feeling good and made Solinsky do all the work and coming around the last turn Solinsky was gassed and Lagat, Teg and Ian Dobson passed him. in the home stretch. If I recall correctly, Solinsky was very upset with Teg after the race.
