Missing from your rant is you actually talking to "team Sheila" and asking them if they wouldn't mind leaving lane one clear while you finished up your workout. It even sounds like one of her friends was polite enough to let you know what was going on and what to expect. I've found most people are pretty chill and are happy to accomodate you if you just ask.
I'm guessing these looks of bewilderment were imagined and that, instead of interacting with this group like a normal human being, you started writing this Letsrun post in your head as you cursed this group and everyone else holding you back.
Also, I love how you portray your track workout as some noble pursuit furthering this "pure" sport.
You miss the entire point: I was there first clearly doing a workout so it's extremely rude to just come on and disrupt this. The guy who came over and told me this like I was supposed to go 'ok, this explains your inconsideration but so long as Sheila is having a good 50th, who am I to complain'
No, the looks were not imagined but clear to see in their expression. One dude who was watching them almost got knocked down as he just sauntered onto lane 1 at the starting line. Like he had never been on a track before or something and was just surprised to see somebody working up a sweat - he was a fat guy who clearly had never heard of interval training never mind ever done it.
My workouts are my workouts for better or worse and I don't believe they are noble in advancing the sport in any way. However, the point is that I am entitled to be able to do a workout on a track that I have paid for the privilege of using without being interrupted.
My point is that running is a much abused sport from the top to the bottom of the pile. This is why you have pri*ks banditing races, cutting courses, trying to run with their dogs, taking endless selfies, swapping bibs and of course assho*es taking PEDs.
What the hell ever happened to respect and etiquette?
You're right, you were there first. Still doesn't excuse you from politely asking them to leave lane one clear until you're finished. You had a mile and a half left, they had 12+ from the sound of it. Again, maybe your town is populated solely by aholes, but I've found a bit of friendly conversation goes a long way. But now you've had several chances to amend your post to paint yourself in a more favorable light and you haven't, so I'm guessing you were the ahole in this case.
You paid for the privilege of working out? Does your track charge some sort of user fee, or are you talking about your taxes? Do you also go into the science lab and fiddle with the Bunsen burners because you've "paid for the privilege" of using them?
Respect and etiquette? You obviously don't respect them, so why should they respect you? Because you're faster?

What about 400m runners would like to practice running the turns, and 800m runners who want to work on their start?
The track is there for the sport of track and field it's for running fast lane 1-8
Why should I amend my post to make someone I don't know think I'm not an a-hole? You got your opinion and I don't care about changing it. Why should I have to ask mid workout when it's as obvious as shaking an old friend's hand when you meet them?
Yes I paid $7.50 to use the track as it doesn't belong to a school. No I don't go into schools and fiddle with bunsen burners or anything else for that matter.
Of course I don't respect them: their behaviour was extremely rude and disruptive. Furthermore, plodding around a track for 50 laps while having a bunch of people blow smoke up your fat as* isn't something worthy of respect in my opinion.
I'll leave that for you to respect.
If you can't do that without being bothered by people walking, you have some sort of positional awareness problem you should work on before going out in public

Public tracks usually explicitly state that inside lanes are for people doing workouts at certain hours. No one follows this though. I ask people if they mind moving to lane 2. Some do so not knowing there are customs. Some yell at me.
Anyway, in some ways it's like it you asking people to not play horse at the park hoop because you are in your rec league championship and would like to work on your jump shot.

Why should you have to ask mid-workout? Because they had just as much right to use the track as you did. I'm assuming they paid their fees as well as I'm sure you would've mentioned it had they not. Sometimes what you think is obvious isn't obvious to someone else. Asking them to leave lane one clear would've taken a couple seconds and it would've led to better outcomes all around.
How was their behavior rude? They were celebrating their friend's birthday by participating in an activity they all enjoy. How awful. Someday you'll be slow, old, and (maybe) fat. Hopefully you'll never visit a track or even think about entering a race.
The track isn't for jogging, you can pretty much jog anywhere else, the park, the sidewalk, the beach, you can jog literally anywhere else in the world why jog on a track? It's like going to a football/soccer field to do keepy-ups. They're taking up limited space for an activity they can do pretty much anywhere else.

I agree, I just think that if you're going to walk on a track you should be the one to be conscious of where you are on the track. When I'm walking in between intervals my head is on a swivel to make sure I'm not disrupting anyone's workout. It just angers me that people just come walking in the track with headphones on deep into a phone conversation. Or pulling a weighted sled or doing farmers walks with kettle bells. That's all fine but they should be the one to move out of the way of the people running. No matter how fast. Also lane 8 is not a shelf for your gym bag.
I'm not asking people not to do these things I just think they should recognize that they're using a running surface for their non-track and field related activities and should give precedence to those actually running.
And you can run fast anywhere. In fact, it may be better for him to do half marathon prep intervals on the roads since I doubt the half marathon is on a track. Would've saved him $7.50 too!
Look, I understand why everyone gets bent out of shape by walkers or joggers or slower people doing intervals in lane one. My main point is to politely approach people and let them know you'd like to use lane one for your workout. Don't be a dick, don't act superior, just have a conversation. You'll be surprised as how pleasant people are.
If you ask and they are rude to you, make fun of your split shorts, spit in your face, or decide to lay down in lane one as a protest, feel free to come back to Letsrun and complain. But in the meantime, just try being an adult.
The OP came here to vent and I share his anger. Please stop preaching the high road.
Apparently they had no idea of track etiquette. As stated above, it would have taken you a few seconds to ask them to move out for about ten minutes until you finished your workout. Then you could have jogged a few laps with Sheila on your "cooldown", made some friends and a good impression. Then when you left the track Sheila and her friends would have said "what a nice runner he was." Instead you come on here and appear to be an a'hole.

+1
My last track session was almost ruined as well by a bunch of soccer moms/dads wandering on and off the track. There is no way to convince everyone to stay clear of a lane, you just have to deal with it.
why the h*ll would you go to track to walk around?
"So you're going for a nice afternoon walk huh. Which trail/forrest/park you going?"
--"No, I'm going for a nice walk on the track."
Is this really a thing, does it exist? As far as I know this doesnt happen in my country.
Are these people crazy? I'm not trying to be a dIck but I just don't understand it.
who let the marathoner onto the track?

You're right. Except when it does, most people don't run right home and post an essay about it.

wasn't me
I don't think they [walkers and marathoners and other road racers] shouldn't be let on the track. I just can't imagine choosing the track for a place to go walking.
Or maybe that's what they are prescribed by their GP, 15*400 at 15:00/mile
I turn 50 this year. I do not plan on celebrating like Sheila.
Fifty laps (12 1/2 miles) at 12 minute/mile pace, and she started sometime in the afternoon along with a bunch of her slowpolk friend? I hope they had flashlights and the phone number for Domino's, and God forbid the bathrooms were locked.

Can you read? I'm inferring that all lanes are for running fast not just the first 2.
