Yesterday in Zurich, Yuki got his first win in Europe in 2:12 in atrocious conditions (think hail, snow, wind, about 35 degrees).
Impressive in itself, but that was his 60th career marathon, his 50th sub-2:17, 30th sub-2:13. And he only turned 29 last month.
Has anyone in history got a record approaching this?
How awesome is Yuki Kawauchi...?

I thought maybe Bill Rodgers could be close on the sub-2:13, bit nope, only 18. Insane consistency.

Kjell-Erik Ståhl ran 101 career marathons, 70 of which were sub 2:20. He ran his last sub 2:20 at age 49. (He made his debut at age 33.)
Between august 1981 and august 1982 he ran 14 marathons within 12 months averaging 2:16:11.
Like Kawauchi, he was working full-time.
Not too shabby either. -

No prize money? Surprised some Kenyans not quite good enough for London didn't go jog a 2:09 FTW.

Very awesome.
I posted this in another thread, but he says now he has won marathons in Asia, Australia, Africa and Europe. "Next up, the U.S.A." -
Kawauchi is likely the best marathon runner in the world right now with normal blood values.
If you put guys like Bekele or Kipchoge to race against Kawauchi head to head on Kawauchi's race schedule then Kawauchi would be beating them in at least 7 out of 10 races. Look at guys like Kimetto (and I think Kimetto is awesome btw), they are now down to 2-11 with several months preparation at altitude for just one race. Meanwhile Kawauchi is still blasting fast marathons week in week out for several years now. Even more incredible is that he works full time.
If distance distance running worked like tennis then Kawauchi would have been ranked world number 1 for the last few years. -

That's the point isn't it. If Kawauchi ran 120-140 miles a week, and quit his job, he would run a lot faster. Instead he's happy to run 2:12's.
Does the guy even sleep in an altitude tent? What a dork. -
I think he makes motorcycles right?

Fittish - Sarah Barker
"How many km/week do you run?
130kilometers to 140km [80 to 87 miles/week; most top marathoners put in 100 to 120 miles/week]
Describe a typical week of training/racing.
Monday and Tuesday, a 20km jog at 5min/km pace; Wednesday intervals; Thursday,Friday and Saturday, 20km jog; race Sunday. I work out once a day, in the morning. I work from 12:45 to 9:15 pm in the office of an adult continuing education school, accepting fees, answering the phone."
12 miles a day @ 7:40 pace. What a dork. -

I should have done my research and not guessed -
Eugene marathon is this weekend. He has a few days rest. He could win with a sub 2:20.
Or wait until November and win a super soft big city marathon in Seattle. 2:38 won it last year. Kawauchi could tempo it and win. -
He is a rock star in Japan.
Used to live there and he came out and ran local race in area we lived (Ota City 1/2 Marathon - he of course won) and you would have thought the Beatles were there. He seemed to take it all in stride - was nice to everyone, helped the sponsors give away a car after the race.
He really was / is a "Citizen Runner".
Plus he is always needling/knocking the establishment of corporate running in Japan which is kind of fun - always seems to be fighting against 'The Man' which is rather unusual in Japan. -

You do know that he's been under 2:09 more than once, right? So when you say he'd run a lot faster do you mean a lot faster than 2:12, which he's already done, or faster than the 2:08 something which is never a given for anyone regardless of how much they train? -

If Yuki is considered a hobbyjogger what does that make Rupp with a marathon PR several minutes slower than Yuki? Less than a hobbyjogger?
