That was great, both the race and the announcing.
NBC should fire Tom Hammond and Craig Masback and hire those announcers for Rio.

Real splits:

Blue (Finnn?) - 61.26 secs
Best guess is Red was about 9 - 10 secs back at hand off so guessing she ran around a 55 second anchor...
Yeah in the interview link ( a few posts up), she said her coach said the split was 54.

That might be Alistair Cragg with PBs of 13:03 and 27:39, but he was born and raised in South Africa.
Embarrassing badly run race. It make runners look stupid.
Poor young lady that was leading into the final lap was most likely the slowest runner by far for that 4X4 team. The tactical coach used the best three runners to build up a lead hoping the "weak link" would gut it to the finish. She did but lost her guts along the way! Also the slower race pace gave the commentators more air time to input more "color".
Agree +10
It was a collegiate race...in Ireland. Basically like a U.S. HS invitational, with many of the girls out of their event and doubling and tripling to boot.If you can't enjoy the spirit of that, then you might just want to stick with watching and snarking on pro (doper) races.

Put a 9:40 steepler on anchor in 4x400 and you get what you pay for.
but it was fun to watch a real sit and kick winner!!

My scorn is not directed to the runners. It is directed to you and others on letsrun who are impressed by a badly run race.

Yeah got those splits too.
Was thinking 54, but could be 55. Had just completed a 11.6 100, 23.9 200 double, with the 200 just 20 minutes earlier.
Been seeing posts on other sites, with anons trashing these women. (guys saying that the had run almost a 4:02 1600 in high school (as we know that's a very select group), or 50 flat 400 as a freshman or sophomore (possible but that's a superb time for that age). Handoffs too.
I think the Yellow jersey had already run the 1500 or steeple and Finn had run a 9:54 steeple that day.
what kind of dumb school has two steeplers anchoring their 4x4?
This is one of my favorite 4x400 races to watch. Featuring Obea Moore, of course.

Best finish ever ... against much slower runners
The slowest runner has to be in 1st.
The fastest anchor runners from other teams are used to "come from behind" in 4x400's since high school. They know how to run in that situations.
Remember. Normally a 4x400 HS team has only 2 pure specialists. The other 2 athletes are 100m sprinters, or even milers.
A mid-d runner usually ignores how to run a fast first 200m (and then mantain) with a 20m leading gap. Contrary to that, they see the gap, and simply "cruise" the first 200m. Then, they will try to kick, like they do in the final 200 meters in a 1500m race, but they can't accelerate because it's impossible in a 400m race.
Not necessarily- and I believe this is what happened in this case the slowest runner ( looks like a middle distance runner from her stride and technique) was put in the last leg hoping that the big lead obtained by the team's top three runners would be enough of a buffer to compensate for her lack of 400 speed. At least they were in contention for three legs instead of being out of contention from early on. At this level the "slowest" relay runner is not a pure sprinter and wouldn't probably have perfect a sprinter's start.
Irish i could run that fast wrote:
wow, those other runners are terrible.
i give her a lot of credit, but i also credit 3 of the other runners for racing like IDIOTS
