Unfortunately not true. It was over 70 degrees at the start (temperature measured in the shade). Not a single cloud. No relief whatsoever until Heartbreak Hill, but obviously by then the damage was done.
I was there, and so were many others. General consensus was that times (at least for the non-elites) were at least 10 minutes off (many were 15 to 20 minutes off). Some lucky ones were only five minutes late.
I agree. I don't know how it was for the women that started 30 minutes before but I was in the first corral and just standing there waiting for the start was pretty warm - It felt like 75 but then again it's going to feel warmer when you're standing in the middle of a bunch of people. Only caught the occasional breeze but it wasn't much.
For me, I was about 6 minutes off where I know I was ready for and I really battled the headwind during the last 8 or so miles. It didn't seem like many people had any clue about tangents or perhaps no wanted to deal with the wind everyone followed everyone else no matter the extra distance. I just wanted to get it over with so I probably ran into the wind more than maybe I should have. Most of the people I knew out there were at least 10 minutes off their goal, although I know a few that ran better than predicted.
Looking at Spence's splits, they were pretty consistent. I'm sure she would have been 2:30 or just below if the conditions were better. She probably just didn't feel the need to push it any harder.
