Pretty sure that happened quite often at the last Olympics.
Now let's talk about the things that
(1) Are doable.
(2) Attractive to a TV audience.
(3) Are already present in worldwide sports in some format.
My solution:
15km Country Country, with both team and individual medals, but there are some significant obstacles that one must climb, tunnels to crawl through, deep mud....make it impossible to stay clean and upright the whole way.
Kind of like a "Tough Mudder" but without the fire and electricity.
I did the Tough Mudder in Mansfield Ohio in April 2013 and I really enjoyed it even though the electricity really freaked me out. Even the Tough Mudder personnel said that it was the muddiest course that they had even seen. It was the first "Cross Country" race that I had competed in since November 1989.
Pankration
I think we should "do it" like the days of old.

Don't get your panties in a bunch and don't judge. Running sans clothes is the fastest way for the best times.

How about Superstars? The late 70's/80's competition with sports stars.
Renaldo Nehemiah was a world record hurdler who won the multipart completion over NFL stars.
Don't ever bring up Superstars to a Canadian.
We are still pissed off they banned Brian Budd.
If 3-time winners had to retire, why did they allow Nehemiah to keep competing, after he won it 4 times?
Pole Vaulting for distance
Yes, breaking to lane 1 on the backstretch of the 400 would be awesome to see again. It would be like lap 2 of the 800, only a lot faster and more exciting.

Both (BOTNS and Superstars) would be awesome TV again, and something similar should replace the NFL Pro Bowl. With respect to Battle of the Network Stars, if you haven't youtubed some footage, do so now and search out Lynda Carter in the swim competition.
