Everyone know Cheserek hopes to be an American so he has a shot to compete at Rio. What event gives him the best chance? Though we have not seen it I think most people think he is capable of running somewhere between 13-13:10 in the 5K. The 5k should have some depth.
The 10k is an event he has never had to go all out, but I think getting the A-standard of 28 would not be that difficult for him. Also, in a slow tactical 10k he could excel.
I don't see him going for the 1500m or Steeple, but I think he is capable of getting the A standard in both events. The US has a lot of good runners so making the team will be no cake walk.

The only event he could possibly make is the 10000, even then I'd only put his odds around 25% of making the team.
Hill and True have him beat for sure in the 5000, and Mead, Chelimo, Lagat, and Jenkins are at the very least equal to him.
Rupp takes a spot in the 10, Kipchirchir is there, and then a myriad of half-marathon types like Chelanga, Korir, Estrada, and Derrick vie for the other two spots. -

I'd agree. Ches is still getting to his prime. Next few years should see him reach his peak, it will be interesting to see exactly where that takes him. He could turn into a 12:5x guy and be a contender, or he could fail to improve much on where he is now, somebody who would likely be just outside an spot on a national team. -
I think Hill and True are most likely to make 5K, but Cheserek has just as good a shot at 3rd position as anyone else.
In the 10k Rupp is a lock and I think Sam Chelanga is most likely to also make team. Beyond that Cheserek again has just a good a chance as anyone else.
Since entering college we have never seen Cheserek race pros in anything over 3k. He has always been stronger the longer the race. Either way provided he stays healthy and continues to improve I see him representing the US in both 5k and 10k in 2020. Someone like Cheserek may just be looking to make team in 2016, but in 2020 he will be going for medals. -
Rupp is certainly not a lock for anything. I'd say his better days are behind him on the track. In addition to that, I heard a rumour today at work that Lagat will be running the 10 in lieu of the 5 in Eugene.

Before there is any talk of Ches making the US Olympic team in a few weeks he 1st has to become a citizen and at this rate it does not look like it will happen.
It does seem like he has been working at this for a very long time already.
What is the hold up with his application? -

3 things:
1. I don't Ches will get his citz in time.
2. I don't think Ches could make the team in any event.
3. Ches has tremendous endurance and will untimately be 10k and the roads type guy. -
If he becomes American in time he will make the team running the 10k.

He also has tremendous speed for a distance guy. I like him in the 5k. And I think he makes the team if he gets his citizenship -
Looking like he will not become citizen on time:

What is the reasoning behind this view? Do you believe that Ches is actually older than he is and that his top end speed is waning?
I get it that Ches hasn't truly competed against the pros and has yet to prove himself. I can see Rupp, Hill and True getting the best of him. But if you believe Ches' age than this idea that he is going to lose to "half-marathon" types in 10,000M is crazy imo. Ches can just sit and kick on anyone who specializes in road racing. And Lagat? I know you have to respect what he has accomplished at such an old age. But he is not going to beat Ches at his best in a 5000M.

I would love to see Chelanga, Cheserek and Lagat make it in the 10,000...
-
It is disappointing he might not be a US Citizen in time. I think he would have found a way to make the team in Rio. I guess we will have to wait until 2020 to see the King on the Olympic stage.
-
I think Ches could make the 10k team 9/10. I don't see anyone other than Ritz beating him consistently.
In the 5k, I also think Ches has a good of a shot as anyone not named Hill. The 5k record at the trials is 13:20+. In that type of race, I'd take Ches over True 9/10 times also. -
Ben True will never make an Olympic team.
Sad, but true (no pun intended)

This is ridiculous. If he is an american then he gets to be on the american teqam.
If not, then he can't because Kenyans are so much faster than us.
THEN, he has to run the time to qualify with a standard
OR
be top 3. -
why not?

Don't get me wrong I love all these guys. However if info was that Ches was hell bent on making the team, and training hard....look out. Yes all the other stuff like citizenship is problems. If I were say True, I would be way worried if Ches was coming after it. Way worried.
