Do you have a non-compete? Steal the client.
This is the worst f@cking advice since Eve listened to the snake. If this asshat is really expecting free work from you, gicing it to him will never get you anything but more requests for free work.
You, however, have done a crappy crappy job of describing the situation. if you were a contractor before and he requests more work from you he obviously knows what you bill. If he wants more q work, tell him that you cant extend credit for more than 4 hours and once he pays the invoice for the other summary, youll be happy to move forward with his most recent request. "What invoice?" "Cant find it? Hang on I'll email you a copy."

I work at my home office as a business consultant.
You were a W-2 employee of a consulting company and worked from home instead of working out of a employer supplied office or work space. Is that correct?
You took sick leave when you were hospitalized. Is that correct?
You were paid an hourly wage and signed in and out of work electronically. Is that correct?
When you attempted to sign in after your sick leave you were told you no longer had a job with the company and was not allowed to sign it for the day? Is that correct.
You never were issued a paycheck after your hospitalization or your last paycheck only covered time worked before your hospitalization.. Is that correct.
You fully briefed your boss on the project you were working on at the time of being fired. Is that correct?
You had no unfinished projects under your control when you were fired. Is that Correct?
With this information confirmed I'll be able to advise you.

They were great clients and I enjoyed working with them.

Agreed.
You never work for free. Never. The only time you work for free is when you are volunteering your time for a good cause.
This thread is ridiculous, but could be of value to those that routinely work "for free" by coming in on the weekend, constant overtime, etc... If you are working every weekend, you better be compensated at some point.
I used to get called in every weekend until I wised up and told them politely to forget it. I have more respect now from both myself and from employer. OP needs to do the same. No work for free. EVER.
BTW, my boss was like the office space boss and he'd literally come by at 4:55pm on Friday's and ask what I was doing in the morning (Saturday). "Oh, could I come in because this project was really important. I'll bring in some free donuts!". Clock work nearly every Friday for months on end.
