Your taking the word tempo to literally. Run a 5k 30seconds slower than your PR and see how good you feel. Let's not turn the performances into something their not.

Actually, Paavo Nurmi, on 19 June 1924.
1500m 3:52.6 WR at 7:05 p.m.
5000m 14:28.2 WR at 8:10 p.m. (set a world record of 14:02 for three miles enroute)
This convinced the Finnish Olympic selectors to enter him in the 1500 and 5000 at Paris

There is a woman who can run that double today, good lord I can't believe this is even in consideration.
So what? Those were world records at the time, better compare them to someone running 3:25 and 12:35 inside two hours today.

It was a 3:52, it did happen.

Keep hating.. Greatest ncaa runner ever doesn't care
Assume 5 was slow or you'd have mentioned time. Nurmi best ever double as times better compared to WR or Owens for a multiple

Lalang was something else, that's for sure. But Ches wasn't exactly running against scrubs either: Yorks, as was mentioned in the LRC article, is the fastest miler in NCAA history. Curtin isn't the same as Hill et al for Lalang, but he did win Pre-nats in cross. Also, Cheserek's 1600 converted to the mile would barely be slower than Lalang's open collegiate record, and would be well faster than the American collegiate record (which he might get when his citizenship situation shakes out).
Now obviously this might be a problematic string of logic, but Ches's 5k time would have won USA's outdoor last year by three seconds. Lalang's 3k time would have gotten him eighth yesterday indoors: just nosing out Rupp.
Not sure what to make of Nurmi. A pair of world records is obviously more impressive than no world records, but he loses to Ches by a hundred meters in the fifteen and by almost forty seconds in the 5k. Sure he was a product of his time and all, but it's tough to say that a much much slower double is better than a much much faster one.
And the recovery time shouldn't be understated. 100 minutes is a lot longer than 32: I can't even image what Ches would've been able to do if he had another hour+ to cool off. He ran one of the fastest times in collegiate history after running a 5k time that would win NCAA's almost every year. That's pretty damn crazy.
all great. but henry rono hands down duel meet double is the best ever.
13:05/8:12 5k and steeple.
3:52.8 for 1600 is 3:54.2 or slower for mile, and a flying start is worth- how much? A second? Awesome double, great runner, but is 3:55 mile one of the best collegiate performances ever? I will look it up...
What scares me is you know darn well if someone was shoulder to shoulder with Ches or he had to chase someone else down who was 15 yards out....well Ches runs faster, and reels them in. What can he really do.
The arrogance of it all
Rupp workout was better

2 meet records in 2 hours going 3:54/7:45 is better than what Ches just did. Not saying Ches couldn't run that too, but Lawi's performance was the best in recent memory.
The year it was in Nampa when Lawi and Chris Derrick battled it out in the 3k/5k double. 13:25/7:45
German Fernandez 2008 California state meet
4:00 1600m solo followd by a high school national record 3200 8:34. The second best double at that level was Rich Kimball's 4:06.6/8:46.5
