Needs to rest if it is indeed a knee thing. ITBS?
As a high school freshman she stopped at 2.5 miles in XC, that was due to a fast early pace and pressure to win. Hasn't looked back, and probably hasn't had a bad race since. Until tonight.
I like her. But it was obvious she was limping in the race- I am amazed nobody saw this.
Not the first athlete to try to fight through a problem. Watch again- clearly limping whe running.
Knee could be anything - often referred pain although ITBS most common probably
She has come 2nd to Seidel before and she finished for example Mt Marathon when she wasn't going to win (didn't they say she broke the record despite coming 2nd?) so I don't think she has a problem with that - she is very competitive but I don't think fragile. Having said that who knows, there has been so much more press lately
Leah O'Connor spoke about running for 5 years of college with no injuries in an interview with Flotrack at
She also discussed the injury she suffered this past summer.
How many women or men can go 5 years through college without a major injury? How many of the top college women can even go a full year or two?

But it looked like tiny scratches, not really bruises. What treatment would lead to that.
no, they were lots of little circular bruises

why wouldn't you scratch then?
She isn't going to scratch because she's a good teammate.
Allie O had tweeted "Looking forward to running on bigger ovals" a few minutes ago. I attempted to repost, received an error message about possibly needing to refresh to be able perform function, and now it appears the post has been deleted.
Where is the link for this

The acupuncture/Chinese cupping? I think it is voodoo but I was including that under "treatment" in any event as I know it's quite common
Ugh I hope this is just ITBS and not runner's knee. If you have an 18 year old phenom and she can't run the last two weeks, don't let her race indoor nats you goon! Too many people have no regard at all for their runners' long term careers.
Whatever is going on right now is hopefully not a sign to come but I think we are all nervous about that.
Too much pressure to win, too much pressure to be fast right. People are talking about her running at the US Olympic Trials for christ sake. That shouldn't be even on her radar. She should be focusing on having a good outdoor season and trying to improve for XC.
Unfortunately I think she may be very limited going forward, she'll produce in college and be solid, but don't think a world beater is showing up anytime soon. Too many US girls out there that are slightly under trained in HS, who will go through 5 years of college getting stronger and stronger and actually making improvements compared to Allie who might spend 4 years oft injured trying to maintain an elite level too often

They looked like the bruises my kid gets from rolling with one of those foam rollers with the nubs. IT band issues would be my guess.
Agree with the sentiment that maybe just holding off until outdoor would have been smart.
Recall she got dinged up at the end of outdoor last spring (hip bursitis?) and opted out of the big invites, only to return on July 4 for the Mt Marathon and to tear it up in XC. So here's to rapid healing--and no racing for 5 or 6 weeks.
Big she qualified for trials and said she wanted to run for fun is that bad? That's my understanding anyway
As long as she sought out official medical services she should be alright to start the 3000. Remember the Virginia Tech 10,000 runner (not the murderer) who pulled the pin in the East Regional, at UNF in 2014, at about 8k then didn't get attention from the meet medical staff. That turned into a bit of a mess. Fortunately they had a couple of days to sort that one out and he was able to start the 5,000. This one has less than 24 hours to sort out. Good luck.
You guys are all wrong. She's starting her taper for the Mt. Marathon race later this summer. She can't waste time with small races like this thing tonight.
Holy crap, you people are quick to change your minds. Yesterday all the talk about Allie O was the Trials, "the future of American distance running," etc. now she drops out of a race probably with a simple IT band issue and and suddenly she's done, already hit her lifetime peak, never gonna be the same again. Like an f'in pendulum, you people, I tell ya. Give the girl some breathing room for chrissakes.
Allie "O"-2 in NCAA championship races...

The ncaa rule is that you have to give an honest effort or you're out of the rest of the meet, which they don't always enforce, but I would think she wouldn't be allowed in the 3k after a DNF.
A dnf is usually considered an honest effort. A scratch obviously is not.
I'm thinking she has been training on an indoor track and tweaked the knee. She tweeted about looking forward to larger ovals. I never cared for the indoor season, seen too many great athletes get injured. Just last year an indoor injury messed up Ajee Wilson's entire season. Two years ago it was Nick Symmonds getting injured running indoors and had to scratch his entire 2014 season. Running in the big indoor meets, especially in those East Coast armories, is a good way to get sick with so many people packed into a stuffy space with bad (or no) proper air conditioning. Indoors only makes sense if a runner is in great shape and can get into Worlds easily.
