"He should be able to pull it off on his own if he wants to stand a chance at World's".
You're kidding, right? Why the hate toward Ryan and Co?

Ryan seems like an awesome guy, so composed in every respect. Hope he medals next week.
Honestly I thought rupp was pretty impressive. he was within 4 seconds of Jager who is an american record holder and 3:32 1500m guy. This is when Jager is fresh and Rupp is coming off the marathon. Kind of embarrassing for jager. He should be well ahead of rupp
I was rather torn about what to think about these tactics--especially with respect to Lomong dropping out.
In general, I am all for tactics of just about any kind in distance races, which is part of what makes distance races so exciting for me. But I also know that when El Guerrouj pulled this stunt in the past, getting one of his teammates to sacrifice himself as a rabbit, it didn't sit well; it struck me as weak, as I think it did with a lot of people at the time.
It is hard to identify, but there is a certain point when elaborate team tactics like we saw today start to seem baldly compensatory--a way for a runner like Hill to make up for a weakness he would not be able to make up for on his own.
Recap:
We got stuck in legendary Portland traffic. It took 45 minutes to get through Naito Parkway. We but got tickets just before the 3000m, which thankfully started late.
I had Infeld, Rowbury, Hall in that order. My contest picks were in jeopardy after Infeld front ran, and seemed to be injured or something on the last lap. I was most surprised at D'Agostino's run. D'Agostino is back.
I looked for the LRC crew, but it was actually pretty busy there.
Enjoyed the showcase events and the last pole vault was great.
I also had Rupp in the top three. He looked seriously out of breath. Obviously recovering still from the marathon.
Overheard some runner after saying the first 200 was 28?
I thought it was pretty obvious that Schumacher's guys ran this way to try and get BOTH qualifiers... Jager fading pretty hard and coming up short was the 'surprise' there. I don't see anything unusual about it; anyone in the field could have gone with them. Heath did and it went okay for him. Jenkins should have, I think he'd have had a great shot at the team. Hill would have won in any kind of race, and I'm sure they knew that. He was a heavy prerace favorite because of the ability he has already shown to win races where his teammates didn't set him up. If anything, a fast race hurt his chances.
Chelimo's close was super impressive.
Whack tactics by BTC. There's a difference between teammates working together; i.e. Rupp/Farah in London, and teammates pacing a few laps before dropping out or dropping back so abruptly that they disrupt the runners behind them. No one really benefitted from the tactics. Hill was the class of the field and didn't need teammates or jacked-up pacing to help him win.
Side note: Chelimo (UNC Greensboro) and Hill (NC State) went college about an hour away from each other and graduated the same year (2013). They're both looking strong... Can't wait to see what they do next week.

Even if this is the case, it is still an unfair advantage to pre plan teamwork to get both guys in. Chelimo didn't have that option, Heath didn't have that option. Maybe Heath had trained specifically for a very fast kick at the end because that's how these races go? He just got knocked off world team because a group teamed up against him.
I thought it was very funny watching, because that whole debacle with Bumbalough getting DQ'd last year and Salazar already having made the claim that Schumacher was working against Rupp. This just made it super obvious. I thought Salazar might go nuts again.
There are Hill questions out of Raleigh.
Folks talking about college stuff.
Raleigh Gieger with a wink and a nod, sophomore year.
but the BTC guys also led a pace train for chelimo, jenkins, lagat and heath, who are ALL on DIFFERENT teams.rudisha pulled everyone to their best times and the best olympic 800m final ever. kiprop pulled 10 guys under 3:30 or something at Monaco. Are those performance tainted or just more special?we all know there won't be a pace train at worlds for Ryan hill, so who cares. He had the world's best 3k for a bit and he was the LETSRUN poll pick for winner of the race. everyone here thought he would win. (jager had an injury by the way, that's why he wasn't sharper)you guys are idiots and never satisfied with any result
I was a fan of the tactics until Lomong dropped out. Even now I'm on the fence and not too critical because I think the goal was to get multiple guys up there to run well. If three guys sacrifice themselves to help 1 guy, that's not so cool.
And with that in mind disappointed with Jager's run, I hoped he'd be up in it. Great breakthrough for Chelimo (what has he done as a pro?).
Hill explained in the post-race that the fast pace was for the other guys, he could win either way. He is right, he can close in 25. Looks like Chelimo got the most benefit of anybody, as BTC dampened Jenkins' kick.

Pretty much everything you said misses the point. What Rudisha did what was best for him. Kiprop was in a race with pacers. What BTC did was purposely done to help ONE team. The result isn't the problem at all. I'm a fan of Hill and it was cool to see Chelimo get a spot. It is how they went about the race that is the problem.
Yes.
The issue isn't one person taking it out hard. The issue is people like Lomong who, in running fast at the start then dropping out, are effectively not racing anymore; they're merely the instruments of someone else's race.
I'll echo what others have said here already and just say that Hill was certainly the guy tonight. He seems like he could have handled any conditions, and props to him for that.
Let's be honest. This was a BS move by the BTC. As another poster said, in a championship race with USA vests on the line, it's one thing to work with a teammate to try and make the team together. It's another thing to have multiple mercenaries hired to lead and then tank. Hill didn't need it and either should Jäger. Lomong and Bayer are respectful athletes in their own right, but they were ordered to be expendable.
but if they and their coach never thought they had a chance to qualify or do well at worlds, who cares?
i think it's awesome they did it. it's helping out your team. no one would care if anyone did this is track meet where team standings are on the line. rupp helped ritz at the 2012 10k trials and got him the standard
rules are rules. they didn't break any. it's just your weird, no killer instinct code of ethics.
Should i be penalized for registering/paying for the boston marathon because i rightly qualified and deciding not to race because my fitness wasn't there even though thousands of other people want my spot?!
no dude, that's not how it works
The most personable interview I've seen from Rupp:
Infeld actually ran off the track, she wasnt shoved. She knew she was gonna fade badly now has this as an excuse.
