In looking through this book last night, some of the stuff noted by Toby Tanser is so out of this world that I really do not believe it.
He was talking about the Armed Forces training camp, where, after a hard morning run, the pack started off real slow on a 90 minute run.
Twenty minutes in they were flat out racing up the Nandi Hills at altitude. This included guys like Tergat and Machuka! C'mon! Wouldn't these guys be smarter than that.
He gives training schedules of some of the runners running hard SEVEN DAYS OF THE WEEK. That simply cannot happen. It does not matter if you are Kenyan; they are made of bone and tendon and muscle like anyone.
Two runners in the book go out three hours before a race that day for an intense 40 minute hill session.
Then there is Moses Kiptanui: FOUR SESSIONS PER DAY at one point as follows: "I went for 10km in the morning. Then I would do intervals before lunch. I would run hills in the afternoon and a distance run in the evening."
Sure, just 2 hard sessions PER DAY for weeks on end.
But no, they are Kenyan, they cannot be injured.
It is certainly a good inspiration to read, but some of the training presented is so absurd I can only laugh.
