Illiotibial band syndrome, shin splints, tibial stress fracture, ball of the foot pain (metatarsalgia), Achilles tendinitis, extensor tendinitis I'm sure I'm done yet
4 years
Pulled calf muscle (3 months)
Not bad for four years, Smooth playa...
I should not that I could be viewed as having run for four years, not three. Since I lost nearly all of my first year with the fractured tibia, I tend to think of the span as only three years.
In any case, there are certainly some runners that deserve a prize here. You guys and gals show great determination. The poster who mentioned avoiding the scalpel made a wise decision.
I am injured right now (glute/groin), and not being able to run is hard for me (it always is).
Happy running to all. For those who are where this balmy weather is: enjoy the nice day. I will watch it pass by, but at least the injury is getting better.
I once rolled my ankle during an XC race.
Thats all.
... Blessed
7 years
10 years
Stress fracture (2nd left metatarsal)
8 years
sprained ankle many times
adductor tear 2x
quadriceps tear 1x
5th metarsasal fracture 1x
I saw this thread and laughed. I've been running 40 years and I'm similar to Fred. I couldn't begin to name all the injuries I've had over the years. I was even told by two doctors at the Mayo Clinic I could never run again. Ha!
Listing all injuries would take a very long time. Here's a partial list. All of these injuries resulted in doctor's visits and time to rehab.
RIGHT FOOT
Turf toe, big toe
Morton's neuroma
Sprained 5th Metatarsal
Badly sprained little toe - ER visit
Plantar fasciitis - arch
Plantar fasciitis - heel
Heel injury (can't remember what it was)
Sprained tibialis
Partially torn retinaculum
Sprained peroneus brevis tendon - 8 weeks off and PT
Sprained peroneus longus tendon - ditto
Partially torn achilles tendon
LEFT FOOT
Turf toe, big toe
Morton's neuroma
Plantar fasciitis - arch
BOTH KNEES
Condromalacia
Partially torn miniscus, both knees
Sprained ACLs
CALF
Sprains of the left lower calf.
HAMSTRINGS
Sprains in body of major and minor muscles
Sprains behind the knee
Sprains at upper attachment
Right hip flexor sprain
Pubis Osteitis - several months off
Inguinal Hernia - left
Inguinal Hernia - right
Sports Hernia - told by two doctors at Mayo clinic I could never run again. Two years off.
ITB Syndrome
I'm sure I'm forgetting a few more. Many of these injuries were chronic. They recur occasionally and hinder training. You just learn to work around it and learn how to tape to get through the workout.
4-ish years
Knee strain
IT band
Pulled a calf muscle and couldn't walk on it for a week
Shin splints for 6 months now
I'm 39, started running in HS, took almost 10 years mostly off (5-10mpw) in my late 20s-mid 30s, and started running again at 36. Volume typically 30-50 mpw during "on" periods, competitive HS runner at the state level, competitive local age group runner now. I'm injured now (calf strain) so I feel like a loser but I've been really lucky over the years:
Running injuries in the early years:
almost nothing but once or twice I had shin splints for a couple days in HS and maybe had achilles tendonitis a couple times for a few days
Running injuries in the later years:
2x runner's knee (always lurks now, but better since I switched to midfoot striking)
1x calf strain (lateral gastrocnemius, a year after I switched to midfoot striking)
1x shin splints (peroneals) - concurrent with calf strain
Unrelated injuries that have kept me from running:
broke a metatarsal at age 17 (basketball) - out 10 weeks
L3-L4 disk herniation at age 35 (softball) - out 3 months but I wasn't running anyway
Ran competitively for 5 years, been running far less for 2.
-IT band injuries
-Twisted my left ankle so many times some trails aren't an option or I'll eat shit
-Plantar Faciitis in both my arches
-shin splints
14 years
Torn Meniscus (2007, 6-8 weeks) [not running related]
Bursitis in my hip (2010, 6-8 weeks)
IT Band Syndrome (2014-15, 3 months)
I also consider myself quite lucky :)
42 yr old female, started running as a freshman in HS
PF for years
High hamstring tendonitis for years and years
R IT band
both achilles hurt
R piriformis syndrome
Runner's knee lots of times
Posterior tibial tendonitis
Still going...crazy, additcted, etc
You guys are crazy. No real injuries, I try to train properly and look where I'm going.
15 years. Most of my injuries have been in conjunction with other sports.
Torn abdominal muscles. Likely related to rock climbing but blown out during run.
Avulsion fracture right leg. I was high jumping and as well as running mid-d at this time.
3 broken left and 2 broken right big toes. All of these were clean breaks from accidentally kicking shit. 2 of the left ones were possibly related to FAI/labral tear, because I had no lift on that side.
Torn labrum of left hip
26 total stitches from getting spiked on 3 occasions
Tibialis Posterior Tendonitis left leg
Stress fracture right fibula
Plantar Fasciitis right foot (likely related to stress fracture and non-running injuries to that foot/ankle)
Minor calf strains
9 years running:
countless bouts with plantar fasciitis
Strained hamstring
sprained ankle 2x on the right
Broken right hand
Dislocated shoulder
LCL strain
strained lumbar muscle
stress reaction in the 5th metatarsal
Strained hip flexor
1 concussion
Been running for about 6 years. In chronological order, I was healthy for 3.5 years, and then had:
SI joint issues (sciatica...? Still not sure)
Posterior tibial tendinitis
Flexor digitorum pain
Achilles tendinopathy
(Probably) Pes anserine bursitis
More SI joint/sciatica problems
More Achilles tendinopathy
It's been a bumpy road; I've been able to run normal volume and intensity about 1/2 of the time over the last 2 years.
Ran in Jr. High and then off and on up to age 33. Ran lots of races and trained consistently from age 33-45+. So, call it 13 years. Most of the worst aches and pains were early on. A few big injuries thereafter.
Shin splints
Runner's knee
Plica syndrome
High hamstring strain
2nd and 3rd met stress fractures
Achilles (garden variety and currently dealing with strain at the insertion which might be a mild case of bursitis)
Groin strain (several, worst was actually misdiagnosed as a bilateral hernia, fortunately the surgeon knew better)
medial knee strain
Calf strain
Bone spurs in right foot on 1st met at big toe
By far the most painful injury of all: ingrown toenail on big toe. Could not sleep it was so painful.
Running for 3 years (am 16 years old)
Plantar fasciitis 2x (currently have)
Shin splints
Sciatica
Achilles
Plantar fascia
Calf pulls
Never missed more than 3-4 weeks total for each in 50 years of running until recently when I banged my knee against a piece of furniture, grooved the femur and have been off running for two months.
Walking right now.
I ran xc/track year round from age 12-22. Took an 8 year hiatus and have been running 25-40mpw for the past 15 months.
Achilles tendonitis was a plague in my younger days.
ITB Syndrome is the older man problems.
No issues otherwise.
