I am a D3 middle distance runner. I have two indoor school records and am part of the 4x800 school record team. I am one of only a few kids (5-8 depending on the season) on the team who have a reasonable chance to score at our conference meets. (12 guys qualified for conference this year.)
Point is, I am valuable to the team. The school doesn't cut and for every kid at my level there's 3 or 4 that can't run outside the slowest heat possible.
I have to wear a women's uniform, which there are a lot of and I grabbed an XL--its baggy enough to look dumb but not feminine, and the one pair of half-tights that I got are a size too small for me. As much as my coach praises me and points to me as an exemplary teammate, I get screwed over on the most basic possible thing. There are no more men's uniforms or tights available and none have been ordered in two years. It's frustrating because I feel like a fool when I'm out there running against the best our conference has while I'm dressed like the fat kid running the slowest heat of the JV 400.
And what am I supposed to do? Any attempt to fix the problem would be written off as a whiny college kid complaining about his shorts not fitting well.
And I'm not paying for my own racing gear because I'm not allowed to--explicitly stated by my coach.
Rant: I'm valuable and all I want is a f*cking uniform that fits

join a running club and im sure you'll get better "gear"!

Well first off, wear the correct size. Who cares if its a women's uniform if you run fast, which you will do if you're so "valuable". If this is unacceptable, borrow a singlet from a teammate for your events or something.

Oh yeah, run literally the same time but do it in a hourglass shaped tank top and bun huggers, everyone will think it's totally normal that there's looser fabric in the chest area. Great advice.
The way I see it if you can't clothe your athletes you're fudging your budget because that's the first priority.
Either ask for a uniform, demand a uniform, or intimidate one of the losers on your team into switching with you. -

It actually doesn't seem like terrible advice. At the very least, his teammates will probably think it is hilarious and kind of awesome, assuming they know about his repeated annoyance at getting the wrong uniform.
I had teammate that made it a point of pride to wear a speed suit regardless of what race they were running that weekend. They'd be out there running a mid 14s 5000m in a speed suit just out of a strange sense of humour. And you know what? It was funny, because they owned it. -
Wear your own shorts.

Your college doesn't have a home ec class? Maybe the local high school does. Ask if one of the fine ladies (or guy) in the class could hem that uni into the cool look it should be.

I don't know if you spend much time around female runners, but a large female singlet is not exactly "hourglass shaped." -
Embrace it dude. Your ass probably looks amazing in women's racing shorts.

At my school the women's uniforms weren't much different from the mens, same with the shorts. They weren't wearing bun huggers and sports bras. If this doesn't work for you, buy some shorts or something in your school's color, wear xc stuff, wear a t shirt with your school's name on it, etc. Buy a singlet and get it printed with your school's name.

He already said his coach specifically won't allow that. -

Coach likes skinny boys in drag. -
Start a gofundme site for your school's program. State the facts more eloquently than you have here and many people will donate to the cause. You then look like a team player and not someone only looking out for themselves...

Are all D3 running programs like this? I have a kid who will be running for a D3 school next year. As much as we are going to pay for tuition he better get a f**** uniform. I expect we'll buy all his running shoes but I hope his school can afford uniforms.

No, not all D3 programs are like this. I ran for a D3 program and was issued a clean, well-fitting uniform every time I made the travel squad. We did have to buy our own shoes, but had travel, food (per diem), and all other expenses associated with competition paid for. If you're really concerned, you should talk to your kid's potential coaches, and see for yourself. -
It could be worse. At my conference meet a runner's shorts were too loose and his entire genitalia (balls and everything) came out of his shorts for the entire crowd to see. He also got last.

Transfer schools. Sounds like you go a sh!tty school.

Maybe you deserve a women's uniform because of how much of a bitch you're being about this.
But yeah that sucks, good luck. -

This is, in fact, how the process actually works, so do this right away.
