So long story short, this past XC season I came in overly fatigued from summer training, and this on top of injuries that kept me out for about four weeks total led to my best time that season being 29:36 (yes I know it's slow), well off my PR of 27:59 (yes I know that's also not super fast).
Once I got back into normal, consistent training, I figured I would be able to at least get a decent amount of my previous fitness back by the time outdoor season rolled around. However, I just ran a track 10k in 36:42, exactly 2 minutes off my PR last year of 34:42. I realize that's somewhat of an improvement from Cross, but I would have thought I would have gotten more fitness back after training since Thanksgiving without any interruptions. My coach also commented that I'm not getting training response everyone else is, and I'm thinking I might be doing something wrong with my recovery.
The thing is, I can't figure out what it would be. I've significantly increased my protein intake (i.e. meat, dairy, some whey protein in the morning, etc.), I eat a generally healthy diet, I average around 7-7.5 hours of sleep/night most days, I use a foam roller, I run easy on my recovery days (been doubling - 30 mins. AM, 30 mins. PM), and I don't generally do anything physically strenuous outside of running. Yet, I haven't seen much improvement at all in workouts or races...
Does anything in there stand out as something I need to improve on? I know my recovery techniques were not this good last year or freshman year, yet I was running faster both of those years...
