If you love how a shoe fits - sure you can buy a ton of them. Eventually, you will run out, but will your stockpile stay fresh and function for 2 years?
Do a lot of people do this? Is it recommended to do it "per season"?
What are the downsides? Say 2-3 identical pairs for each type of shoe.
*Inspired by thread regarding Ravenna 5s.
Stockpiling your favorite shoe, Yes/No?

I buy two pairs at a time so that I can purchase new pairs at my leisure.

Sure, your stockpile will stay fresh. Modern shoes last for many many years.
The only downside is that you will find a better shoe or change what you like in a shoe.
So I say buy 10 pairs if you really like them... -
I suppose if I change my training/focus, the shoes may not be in my best interest.
-
Yeah I do this

I loved the Kinvara 1, and I bought a bunch of pairs for $30 - $40 each. They last ok until my last pair, which I just threw out last month. At that point, they had dry-rotted and the glue deteriorated so that the sole was starting to separate before I used them. I got under 300 miles before they literally fell to pieces.
For two years? Yes, they were fine. For six or seven years? No. -
I buy two at a time, but sometimes up to 4 if the price is right.
I've found that the more I use a single model, the faster they wear out. For instance, I can get 475 miles on the first pair. But the 3rd or 4th, I can get closer to 400. -
I wish I had done it. New Balance caught me totally off guard by discontinuing the Minimus 00v2 this winter.
-
a few weeks ago I bought 5 of my favorite pair of shoes. When I'm no longer a poor college student I'll probably buy 10-20 at a time.
-
very good idea. I wish I'd done this.
The brooks t4 and t5 were great. Then they made the shoe more curved and switched the lacing to the side. I couldn't lydiard lace the t6 and t7 and they don't feel right on my feet. I'm eager to try the new hyperion racer whenever they come out this summer.
Same thing with the adizero rocket. I've tried original adios as well as boosts, the hagio, and the takumi sens. None feel nearly as good. The takumi sens and hagios have rubber nubs instead of like rubber plates (idk what they're called), built into the shoe and they lace too tight on top, hurting my foot. I don't get the same responsiveness I got from the rocket. Both the original adios and adios boost feel heavy and unresponsive to me, even if the world record was set in them. I wish I'd bought 10 pairs of rockets or so and cut out a vacation or something.
If a shoe you like is on the verge of being discontinued, buy as many pairs as you can. -
When my city has a marathon, the local running shoe store sells shoes for $50. A good time to buy them in bulk.
-
whenever my favorite pair goes below $75 on amazon, I buy a few.
-
Surr thing. I try to stockpile especially when it comes to race shoes. Shoe producers have a bad habit of introducing crappier products year after year. I mean Adidas boost and such.
-
The most I've bought is 4 pairs.
10 pairs seems like too much but if a guy puts in many miles and needs a new pair every 2 months it may not be too much. -
especially good when they bring out a new version. You can find your favorite (previous) version at reduced prices. I usually buy around 3 or 4 pairs.
-
Not a good idea.
Shoe manufacturers use very poor glue that will degrade over time.
If you stockpile your shoes there is a good chance the soles will become unglued due to degraded glue.
I have had this happen to me more times than I would like to mention. -

this is because saucony uses extra cheep asian labor. -
It's because making a shoe that lasts forever is a bad business model. No one would ever need to buy new shoes.

Dat don't make no sense

I have a 5 shoe rotation of various age shoes, of various brand/model.
When I find a shoe I like, I get 3 or 4 pair, introduce them at various points in the rotation and usually keep a pair new in the box for later.
But I don't consider it stockpiling. It's just having a supply of shoes I like. Every time I forced to look for a new shoe, I end up finding something else that I like better than my last shoe (may be psychological).
I always buy a model or two behind the current model, often on closeout from runningwarehouse. I average $50-60 per pair, never pay over $70 for a single pair.
