Originally we both wanted 2, then we had our first. One feels like enough.
If you are scared to just have one kid, look up the book "One and Only." It dispels the myth that only children are spoiled or at a disadvantage. They turn out just as normal as any other kids based on how well the parents do their job.
We met in our mid-20s and were both from good families with 3 kids, and I think we assumed we would have a couple kids, but weren't set on a number.
Throughout our relationship and into our marriage, the kids question would come up regularly. She never felt super maternal. She always thought that might come, so we had age markers. See how things feel at 32, make a concrete decision by 35, things like that.
Now in our mid-30s, we love our life and are not planning on having kids. As another poster said, things should feel right in this department. If you are surprised by what the other person is saying, you don't really know each other well enough to be going down this road.
A chuckle was had
Have a boy(2.5 yrs old now) and thought we would always have 1-2 kiddos. We saw he really liked socializing with other kids so went for one more and now have twins on the way. . Going to be much more crazier then anticipated!
