Even chimpanzees, our cousins from an ancestor way way back, have been observed making spears to stab and eat critters with! Don't tell me my upright-walking australopithecine forebears couldn't figure out how to make a pointed stick too.
If there is no fossil evidence, it's because they weren't putting sharp rocks on the end just yet. Our big brains developed almost entirely around the ingenious construction of sharp rocks.
