Wow. I think that's a new one, even for the LRC boards...

Trolling again, heh, John?
Rupp has a relatively low VO2 max compared with top Americans. He is fast however and has incredible efficiency and economy. Thats why he struggles at the 3k-5k distances and is able to still succeed at the 1500 and marathon.
The replies are from Portland 90 mainly.
I have no doubt he could make the team on something less than his best day. But he is recovering from his first marathon ever, and a damn good one at that! Who knows what will happen but I'd say don't count him out!

Do you even know what V02 max means?

And where were all the VO2 maxes of US elites measured in a controlled study and compared against one another?
Learned scholar's post shows why this board is trash, throw some buzzwords and coachspeak in a post to sound smart when you have no clue what you are talking about (or any hard evidence to back it up).
Look you make some good points. Rupp has gotten it down in the past but the vast majority of that was outdoors which is easier for him because it's a 5000, not a 3000 and there are 3 spots, not 2.
Plus few of you seem to realize he's doing this a few weeks after a marathon. You say you wouldn't bet against him. I certainly would take the field over Rupp for the 2nd spot. If Centro enters the 3k, then Rupp shouldn't even bother running as he ain't going.
What do rabbited races have to do with anything? If this was an all out rabbited 3000, Rupp's odds would be much greater. This is a tactical 3000.
I think totally the opposite. Rupp is a distance GOD. i THOUGHT FOR SURE he'd break the American born 5000 record last year when he ran that 5000 after Worlds. His endurance is world. His kick, despite the fast mile pb, has always been his Achilles heel.
He very well coudl get the spot. I think his and Jager's speed are similar. None are great at 800 but they can run a fast 1500/mile. Lopez doens't seem to be the same and Lagat is out.

The Brothers Johnson are admitted trolls. It's non-sense to say that a guy that has run a 3:50 mile, has kicked hard in an Olympics race for a medal, has kicked in 52 or there about in a championship 5k isn't fast. And yea, you know, make virtually every team he's tried for a decade. Olympics, indoor/outdoor WC. He'd be the best XC runner too if he cared.
It amazes me that peole think we are trolling our own site. I've been leading the Rupp marathon bandwagon since he declared for that race. Everyone said, "But he hasn't done one yet." I was like, "I don't care. He's going to win it." He did.
I just think I understand distance very well and think it's hard to come back from a marathon. No one tries it - for a reason.
He's made virtually every US team outdoors at 5000 and 10,000 not at 3000. He also hasnt' had to contend with Ryan Hill and Evan Jager. Hill is a lock for me and Jager has a better 1500 pb than Rupp. Now Jager missed some time and is similar to Rupp in terms of speed..

Really?!? Was this covered on the site???
Seriously, give the posters on this thread at least a hint of credit.
rojo: he finishes a 5k in 1:51 with a 52 last 400. How is his kick his Achilles heel? I'd rather say he's sans Achilles heel.
Somewhat reminds me when in 2011 Hall, coming off of 2:04* decided to run the 1 mile road championships 3 weeks later. His marathon pace was 4:46, finished his blazin' 1 mile in 4:17.
Obviously Rupp is a much better mid-d guy than Hall ever was. But to think he'll have a legs to run a 27 second last lap to beat out a talented and fast field in the neighborhood of 7:38 is preposterous.
Or put another way, if he does, add me to the list of the suspicious.

As no one tries we have no data to understand why.
This is good that he is trying so we will have something to compare to.
I am thinking that if the marathon effort was less than all out, then four weeks recover may be adequate.
I've seen Michael Wardian run a 2:30 marathon one day and then a sub 16 5K the very next morning.
It's good to see a runner go into uncharted territory instead of playing it by the book all the time.
Salazar probably won't let him do it, but if Rupp were to go to the front and go through 1600 in 4:00, that would make the race interesting.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
