He's a good guy and I was really rooting for him. Sigh. Man, THREE stress fractures in the past six months? After all those years of mega-mileage that he seemed to hold up under. Maybe it is diet. Or just that workload catching up to him.
I hope he's able to get everything figured out, and to run some great races in the future. Man, the way the Trials process is, is such a cruel mistress. Train and wait for four years, and then get waylaid by an injury. Frick.
Ugh! Really bummed to hear this about Ryan. I've always rooted for him. 3 stress fractures back to back like that has got to been so demoralizing! Hope he can figure things out and achieve one of his goals this year. Damn!!

He was my pick! So mad! He has lost a lot of weight over the last few yrs. Don't think it's the mileage; he has always been a high mileage runner.
Guess he'll have some time for jury duty now.

This is it! I bet he undereats which is really depleting his body. Running 140 miles week with the intensity he was hammering requires a shit ton of calories and carbohydrates. Not getting enough definitely shows up in form of injuries.

More like classic compensation injury cascade. He gets one injury and tries to come back too fast, which causes him to put excessive stress on another part of his body to protect the area that hasn't fully healed, thereby leading to a new overuse injury. You can't force fitness and you can't force the healing process. In hindsight he tried to do too much too soon.
I'm waiting until Friday night to enter the LRC contest. These late pullouts/injuries prove this is the best strategy. There's good gift certificates on the line!
Is injury prone Ritz tapering ok?
The real man of the marathon from OSU is Joe Grey, ironically, not a Smith runner. I believe he was there while under Weis.
Joe's healthy. Perhaps, Weis should coach more marathoners with Joe's actual success at winning national championships.
