I remember a lot of races like this my first few years of college-- trying to hang with my betters during a heavy training block and just getting hammered.
Good for him for taking risks.

Yep.
I saw the race. It happens with younger guys thrown into the fire.
But I'd like to know how hard he fought out that last 400. He was out of the picture. I don't care so much about the time, as slow as it was, but I hope he ran as hard as he could and didn't just jog it in.

Since he was worn out or sick, running has hard as he could would be dumb.

It's never been freshman 10. Always 15.
Freshman 10
Supposedly during freshman year of high school, girls mostly gain 10 pounds during the year

Three things going on with Maton.
First, he just need to get the dosages adjusted.
Second, he's practically geriatric.
Third, even though he is at a clown kollege where the academic pressure is less than zero, Maton is no genius by a long long shot and may be struggling with his miniscule class load.
As a frequent observer, I've noticed that Oregon tends to race at goal pace rather than at current fitness. I think their philosophy is to practice racing where you want to be and if you blow up a lap short of the finish- that's OK, you'll add the fitness later.
I think they prefer this approach over running mid-pack just to test your fitness.
I've never had the chance to ask the coaches if this is accurate but it's a pattern I've seen a lot.

Yeah, I'd fuq her.
3:39.9 1500. Nice bounce back to form when it counts.
I always knew Maton was a beast from the time he broke Galen MF Rupp's course record. Total savage.
3:39. Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
Not too shabby.
