Alan webb took down Galen at a turkey trot 5k a few years back. Alan has more guts than Galen and can whipe his behind in the marathon

Isn't the downside (for Rupp) that he will miss out on the big appearance fee he would have gotten from one of the major marathons for making his 26.2 debut there? I'm sure he'll still command high fees later on, but you would think he would get extra for debuting somewhere.
I keep hearing this repeated everywhere, but is there any merit to the idea? I know Mo got quite a lot of money for his debut, but he's a British superstar in a way that Rupp simply isn't for America. Are appearance fees really any higher for an unknown debut of a star than they are if said star wins an Olympic medal in his second ever marathon? I don't actually know much, so I could easily be wrong. It just seems wrong that what you're saying is dogmatic and repeated everywhere seemingly without much weight behind it.
yes, I saw him wearing an altitude mask 20km from downtown while doing an obvious long run on paved trails. It was obvious he was training for a marathon.
He didn't say hi, but was focused on his long run. It had to be marathon training and confirmed now.
The only way that this will cost him appearance money down the road is if he bombs. Rupp as a debut is more enticing than Rupp's second marathon after a subpar showing at the Trials. However, I believe if Rupp makes the team (very likely) he would earn just as much if not more than for a debut. NYC would love to say "Olympic Marathoner Galen Rupp". The Hobby Jog hordes don't care nearly as much about a guy running the 10K in the Olympics as they do a marathoner.
And even if he does bomb the trials, I'm sure Al Sal and Nike can spin it so that he still generates a good paycheck for showing up in NYC or wherever.
"Too much smog, etc in LA. He'll blast one in NYC!" Cause, you know, NYC is known as the clean air capital of the world and all.
Chelanga will make the 1st surge and beat Galen like he did at ncaa's!
If Galen wins the OT he is going to make insane money at his first major US marathon. If he drops out, which he will if he starts to fade, he will still do just fine money wise down the road.
A few observations.1. The course does not suit Rupp well. He's a rhythm runner, and all those turns won't help him. 2. In a marathon, one doesn't sit on someone else.3. One never knows, but I'd be surprised if his entry does not guarantee a faster pace than would be the case if he didn't run.4. He didn't need it, but I think this will give Ritz an extra piece of motivation.5. It looks like the weather will be warmer than average--mid to high 60s at race time, and then into the lower 70s.

why wouldn't do that? He should sit wherever he needs to outkick whoever for 3rd place and make team without the risk of blowing up.
Would be crazy if rupp wins the OT trials and then wins the indoor 3k . Anyone know how much time is in-between?
this is exciting news in a sport which can use every bit of excitement it can get.
certainly makes the predictions more interesting. with no marathon experience, rupp is a wild card!! but with what he brings to the table, he will be a factor, beyond any doubt. i think rupp entering this race helps ritz, hurts some of the less experienced fellas.
at any rate, i'll be watching... really excited to see how this plays out.

5 weeks, 1 day to final; the heats are a few days earlier.

An altitude mask? What?

Au contrare, a rhythm runner, like Carlos Lopes for example, would handle the turns quite well and take advantage of them. Rupp is typically a sit and kicker, not a rhythm runner, in fact he rarely if ever sets the pace, and the course might not suit him well if people are keeping pace on the turns. However if they keep bunching up, then that would give him the advantage.
he will not make the team! he will get busted up over that distance.
Some kind of mask. Either altitude or pollen. Not making it up. Why not altitude since Portland at sea level?
interesting how they use a picture of him wearing a mask for every story about him.
I'm very glad rupp will be there - it was starting to look like Ritz Meb Abdi all over again.
I think Rupp will win the event - he's simply the class of the us long distance running world, and his half marathons have been solid.
He'll get $80,000 if he wins, I'm sure nike will give him some sort of large bonus for making the olympic team and he'll be a big story going into Rio, ensuring some fame and dollars.
but he probably has enough money already - I don't think dollars make a huge difference in his plans.

Now it's going to be interesting. Knowing AlSal, I suspect Rupp will just sit on the leaders until the last kilometer before trying to go for the win. I really hope there is a big enough pack of runners that can stay together the last six miles to make it interesting. I would love to see a pack with Estrada, Rupp, Meb, Ritz, and Puskedra trading surges the last few miles instead of say Rupp, Meb and Ritz jogging along the last few miles before someone takes a shot at the win.
He might not even go for the win. 3rd is as good as 1st, especially if he still wants to do indoors. Slower the time the better.

Too true. How are you gonna run a marathon if you're just sitting there?
(I'll see myself out)
Would be an epic year if Rupp could
OT Marathon
US indoor 3k
OT 10k
OT 5k
Best ever year by an American?
The time scale would be
Feb 13 Marathon
(4 weeks)
March 11-12 US indoors
(1 week)
March 20 World indoors 3k
(15 weeks)
July 1 OT 10k
(1 week)
July 10 OT 5k
(4 weeks)
Aug 13 Olympic 10k
(1 week)
Aug 20/21 Olympic 5k or Marathon
Is it doable?
