I am working on the homepage for tmw and saw that UVA thrower Filip Mihaljevic is now leading the NCAA thanks to his 67'10.75" heave last week.
http://www.european-athletics.org/news/article=mihaljevic-impresses-again/index.html
It made me wonder, "Who is coaching the guy?" The UVA website doesn't list any throws coaches.
http://www.virginiasports.com/sports/c-xctrack/spec-rel/track-coaches.html
If the answer is no one, does this prove that coaches don't matter at all? (Let's hope the answer isn't Maric on the side).
Who is coaching the UVA throwers now that banned doper Martin Maric has to sit out the year? They lead the country

If you are unfamiliar with Maric and the backstory, here is our article on how he was employed all of last year by the University of Virginia despite being supposedly banned from the sport.

How is Maric still in the US? Wouldn't his visa be a special skills one for a specific type of coaching not a rec center job...

Would uva consider teaching collegiate track athletes the intricacies of doping a "special skill"? Apparently so. I'm SURE Fetzer wouldn't dare let Maric still coach the UVA throwers..... and unicorns are real, OJ is innocent, and Elvis is alive. -
This smells to me, for sure. UVa was so arrogant with the BroJos and even to USADA in this matter, I wouldn't put anything past them. The guy should be deported.

What's that in human units? -
Coaches matter.
Coaches that know how to guide their athletes to higher levels of athletic performance matter more.
Coaches willing to break the rules to provide an unfair advantage matter even more.
Coaches and athletes that break rules to outperform competition are rewarded handsomely.
Case study #1:
USATF Home Page "Featured Athlete Bios"
Athlete: Justin Gatlin
Coach: Dennis Mitchell
Coaches that know

Not just regular USATF athlete bios..."Featured Athlete Bios"
That's special -
Did a little research of my own.
A Croatian newspaper article from 1/24/16 reported that Maric is still coaching Filip.

Great display of resiliency. He keeps popping back up. -
So let's get this straight:
1. Uva throws coach maric fails drug test while competing - receives two year ban from iaaf. (Which should also apply to anyone he coach's during this ban, no?)
2. So far, during this ban, he has coached uva athletes through collegiate season all last year; traveled to euro JR champs, recruited there for uva, AND Coached Filip at the meet while he was representing Croatia.
3. Received coaching award from the ustfccca.
4. Is still employed by uva, basically on paid leave (not allowed to coach team -"wink wink") until his ban runs out; whereupon he will return "officially" to his coaching job.
Obviously drug suspension bans are meaningless and not recognized/enforced by the Uva program, by the Uva AD, by the NCAA, by ustfccca, by the Croatian federation, or even by the IAAF.
So the takeway here boys and girls is,
YES, in dealings with all of the above institutions - CHEATER'S do prosper. -
Read it and weep:

Wow. This is an UTTER DISGRACE.
Parties in the wrong:
1. Martin Maric.
2. Bryan Fetzer, for failure to take strong action to show zero tolerance for doping.
3. UVA AD Craig Littlepage, for failure to take strong action to show zero tolerance for doping.
4. USTFCCCA, for rewarding a banned coach and doper!
5. NCAA. You'd think that with all their asinine rules, they'd have this one covered.
5. Croatian athletics federation, for allowing this guy to follow Filip around
6. UVA Track Staff, Team, and Alumni, for not putting up any visible fight to rid their program of this cheater (please correct me if they have meaningfully protested)
I agree: TL;DR: Dopers prosper.

Disillusioned alumni here and couldn't agree more on the above 6 points. Would love Rojo to contact the Athletic Department and find out a) who is supposedly coaching the throwers? Did they hire a new coach? And b) any comment on the Croatian news article?
Any other sport and the local paper would be all over this and the head coach/AD's ass would be on the line. At the very least there would be some answers given besides "no comment". But not track.
For a school that just beats you over the head with its honor code posturing, it really is a fair point... -

So, any of you honorable uva student athletes reported Coach Fetz and Coach Maric to the honor court? -

Just an archived page? Perhaps.
But click on "FOR RECRUITS" and check out the assistant coaches and their respective video presentations:

Here is Maric's twitter page:
https://twitter.com/coachmaric
Here is Maric's facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=4921862&fref=ts
The university's electronic directory says that Maric is a Fitness & Instruction Programmer in the Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports:
http://www.virginia.edu/cgi-local/ldapweb?mm2mp
Here is the staff page for the Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports:
http://recsports.virginia.edu/?q=staff
Look at the telephone number for Maric in the electronic directory. Is that a telephone number for someone in the Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports? Compare it to the telephone number for the head track and field coach. See if any other UVA assistant track and field coach has ever had that number in the past.
According to this page, Maric has completed approximately 1.5 years of his two-year ban, which ends approximately August 6, 2016:

Any guesses about who will be the official throws coach in September?
Really, this whole matter sickens me. And I agree with "sickened" that a number of parties seem to deserve blame -- or at least scrutiny -- in this case, which does discredit to the entire university.
By the way, I'm curious why any athletes involved in IAAF-sanctioned competition have not (I assume) been given written notice of Maric's status and potential consequences under the "prohibited association" provision of IAAF's anti-doping rules. -
What surprises me more is that it's common knowledge among throws coaches in the NCAA that he is still coaching those kids and clearly no one is saying anything,..what may be less common knowledge is that these kids have learned a lot from their coach...

Learned a lot about what?

What do you think? You ever seen how big some of his guys are...? -
Did some research, apparently the current president of the Croatian athletics federation was once the coach of Mr. Maric. According to this article:
