He is a head above every US distance runner. He can jog a 65 first half and burn-out all his competitors.
I hope he does run, but he will not.
THEY GOTCHA.
I would be upset if he doesn't run the OT marathon, only because the clock is ticking, and not sure his running life-span can support him until 2020 trials.
Galen - if your read these crappy posts, PLEASE pay attention... Run the damn OT marathon! If you are in the mix at 20 mile mark, then just run the f'in sh*t out of the remaining 10K and get your spot on the freaking team (don't worry - you will recover well) . The clock is ticking... if you are healthy, you should go for it. Your coach sure as hell went for it in his debut! Bottom line - you can medal in a slow-to-reasonably paced marathon in Rio. This will translate into megabucks in appearance fees and sponsors afterwards. As you can already tell, the other big sponsors (Kelloggs/Wheaties or Nissan (think R Hall)) and other big spenders, will not care too much if you get another silver in the 10K. But they would pay you and your family major $$$ if you medal in the marathon.
Good luck! Wishing you the best!
He has to get a big race in before Alberto is banned by USADA this Spring.
When do they have to announce they will run? I vaguely remember someone suggesting 6 days out?
Honest question, what advantage does he have in surprising us? He clearly has the most talent of all those already running. My guess is he won't run although I wish he would.

I'm in the camp where I think if he is 100% mentally committed to running the trials, he'll make the team. If he's not totally on board, he'll run and then dropout when a few leaders make a move before the 20 mile mark. I'd like to see him attempt the race but only if he is really committed to trying his best to make the team. Otherwise, I guess we'll see him on the track for the 10k for the 10th year in a row.
I'm of the mind that I don't know if he's going to run the OT M, or not, and I'm not going to think, worry, or care about it until I hear differently.
It's his business.
I'm just going to wait and see.
All I care about is the the USA puts their best "4" forward. (Alternate too.)
Wouldn't that be his debut marathon? I don't really see Salazar putting him into his first marathon at the olympic trials, then his second at the olympics assuming he makes the team. I don't see how a hard marathon at the trials would help preparation for 10k or 5k. I don't see why Salazar would have Rupp run a "slow" marathon or run 16 miles then drop out. So I guess I'm just not seeing Rupp coming to the line.
Rupp has a good chance to medal (again) in the 10k. Even a small chance at the gold. I can't imagine he would take a pass on that to try to take on the best in the world at a marathon where conditions will be very tough (hot.)
Well, considering that I've never believe Galen would run the trials (and I don't know why anyone thinks he would), I will not be upset. That said, in a perfect world, I'd love to see all our top men in this race #America

Then you'll probably be upset for the rest of your life.

Why did you get that impression? I think many people on here aren't Rupp fans. He's got a lot of detractors. Most letsruners are people who root for the underdog so I'd assume they don't want him swooping in off of a rupp certified trianing plan and taking a spot away from some guy who has been grinding it out on the roads with little fanfare for 5 years.
. . . Seppuku.
Here is the #1 reason he will not run: money.
London or Boston or New York will pay big for him to debut on their course. Why risk it just to try for a team when you are a lock for the 10k? The risk of not making the team or getting beat or even drop out is too great. That mistake could cost him half a million dollars.
Unless grandpa Phil has a nice contract bonus for running the trials there's no reason to.
It's about money people. Stretch the career as long as possible before retiring to work for Nike.

I know it'll come across as a knock to our other guys, but fact is he is only one that could actually "do something" in the Olympics.
Um Meb was 4th in the last games and PRed in 2014. Also got silver in hot Athens 2004.
Your comment is idiotic.

If this was a legitimate conclusion Tadese would be the world's best marathoner.
Thanks. None of this occurred to us!
I'm personally baffled that there is any uncertainty about this! Whilst the UK is not currently renowned for its deep marathon running pedigree, if Mo was planning on making the step up to the marathon in an Olympic cycle it would be well established at least 6 months in advance, if not more.
It seems to me that the very fact that Rupp or AlSal aren't declaring their hand in this indicates uncertainty, and this close to making a debut over 26.2 surely that uncertainty is detrimental to any preparation?
Not at all.
This is an election year after all, there are bigger fish to fry.
I want him to run but then I could see him never running- after the testosterone thing with Hall.
I'm 56 and had my testosterone tested for the first time ever last week.
I HATE marathons- ran 4, hate em, hate the training, het the race.
Love to watch them.
My T is 669.
I swear.
I take no drugs or T boosters.
My doctor said it was my lifestyle- I LOVE the 800- short, harder runs, speed work, core work, some weights.

I won't be that upset but I would like to see him run. I wonder if the fact that he isn't entering any of these Portland indoor meets is any indication?
didn't frank shorter run indoor seasons?

I wouldnt care one bit. Rupp is a p*ssy
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
