Apparently, by the your continual rants on this subject, it bothers you a great deal. Is Gladys getting more attention at work than you do for your piddling 15:xx?. Is meathead Joe getting all the accolades for his Tough Mudder finish? Are you stuck in no man's land with your 15:xx - not even close to even sub sub elite level, but for heaven's sake people you're faster than Gladys. No one is giving you the validation that you seek. 100+ mile weeks going down the drain because Gladys and meathead Joe are getting all the glory. Heck, meathead Joe didn't even have to train for his race and Gladys just started running last month. Look at me, people!!!!!
Sucks to be you. Keep your head up though. It's only going to get worse from here.

Gladys has a 5K this weekend. Could be a bad Monday for you at work. Might want to call in sick.

Another poster already said it... but seriously, where does RW say this? You're creating a fantasy world. RW's overarching message is that all running (and finishing) has value, not that all running is equal.
That's kind of funny. If someone said "Running fast is only accomplished by a handful of lucky people, so we shouldn't try," you'd rag on them. But you're effectively saying "Having the maturity of an average 12-year-old is really hard, so we shouldn't try."
All this talk about "the honorable and noble struggle of the sub-elite" and so on... I agree with you. It's great. I've been there and have no regrets whatsoever. But it was because of the intrinsic value of the struggle, not because I hoped people at work would think I was fast. All this crying about Gladys getting more attention and people thinking she's equal to you... it seriously blows my mind.
Gladys owes you, pal. She's gotten into your head. You're toast.
@holdthephone
You misunderstand me. I refer to RW and their ilk as a general catch-all group for people who exhibit this behavior. Referring to them is just an easy and effective way to reference the lot of them. Or so I thought. Anyways, if you want a specific example, The Penguin Runner has been particularly instrumental in cheapening the race experience.
The second misunderstanding: I am not saying that people should stop trying to be mature and secure about their running, I am saying that actually being mature and secure about one's running is difficult and rare. It is largely hypocritical to tell someone to be so, as so few are secure and mature about it, and the poster likely isn't one of these few.
Lastly, understanding the problem doesn't mean that you suffer from it. Not that I expect anyone to believe me when I say it, but this stuff doesn't bother me anymore, mostly because I don't run anymore.
Sorry for the confusion

While this is an obvious troll, you accidentally have brought up a good point. Since when do humans not need validation by their peers?
And allow me to apologize. I'm so sorry! I had no idea you'd be reading this... If I had, I would have definitely written it at a 7th grade reading level. Fvck. I'm sorry. I had no idea that you'd come by and read everything and take it literally. Dammit, why don't I ever consider my audience when I write?! I could have done it in crayon- maybe then, I'd have been able to make you understand
"cheapening the race experience."?
This is your concern? Well, la-di-da.

@holdthephone
I thought YOUR peers were the elite runner's like yourself (that's why you come here, right). Why do you need validation by Gladys and her slow running friends and her non-running friends.
See folks. This is what you get when you give a kid participation trophies their whole life. Millennials. What are we going to do with them?
Son, put your big boy panties on. Go for a run and stop worrying so much about Gladys and her pals.

Croikey! Here's a troll in disguise. Take a look at the way he appears to address two people. That's more confusing than walking into your brother's room and seeing him naked, swinging a koala around, and singing 'waltzing matilda' in french! Who's he actually talking to?
Look at how 'e lays his trolly-trap. Right at the end, he makes a go at millennials. that will drive them wild!

Allow me to educate you on the human condition.
1. People get bothered by stuff.
2. People talk about stuff.
It's ridiculous (and stupid, really) to suggest that just because someone takes a minute to articulate something that's bothering them, that person is somehow doomed to a miserable life. It's the people who feel the need to to make those judgments who concern me.
I'm not Christian but at least in the Christian Jesus stories, Jesus is not a guy who goes around, hectors people with "What's wrong with you? Get enlightened, losers!", and then smugly glides effortlessly through a perfectly lived life.
Either way, I think my man Coebra's going to be jusssst fine.

Oh you brave, brave defender of the weak.
No one is belittling people for being slower-than-amazing.
No one is suggesting racing is pointless if you're not going to win.
No one is proposing being rude or unpleasant towards people who are just out for a run or jog or walk.
No one is actually saying any of the things you are all fired up to object to, so you can feel important.
The only one calling people 'a**hole's for what they do, or believe, is you.
You're the a**hole, a**hole.
luv2run wrote:So why do you run a race then? It is doubtful that you are going to win it.
I dare folks who think this way to go to a marathon and say this to the folks finishing.
Arrogant A**holes.
How long have you been around? The board is full of people mocking those who are slower. How often is "hobby jogger" invoked? Funny considering how few, if any, regular posters are making a dime off their running.

* The women will receive running tops & shorts from Moving Comfort
* Random prizes to entrants
* Trophies & medals to top age-group finishers
ENTRY FEE: $5 before June 23; $7 late entry
These were the days before hobby joggers
First, that $5 is now $16.
Second, the cost of closing off streets has increased dramatically. I remember being involved with a 10K in my home town of about 20K people. The police charged a small fee for a "parade" and charged nothing (still not sure how that worked). Recently and especially since the crash on 2008 cities have increased fees for races.
Lastly, demand is up and those folks want an experience.
If you can organize a marathon for $16 with comparable amenities as in 1979 it will be interesting to see the response.
If you are a competitive runner training for the best you can be you look at a race as a serious competitive race.
If you are a fitness jogger you look at it as a opportunity to further your fitness goals.
Get a grip guys both views can exist.
Think of it as a circus parade the sleek lions and the tiger come first and the elephants come last so nobody has to step in their dung.

Nothing groundbreaking but a nice neat example of why RW is terrible.
There is nothing "infuriating" to me about Lebow's quote. Fred was a guy who evolved his NYC Marathon well beyond the confines of Central Park, and ultimately created a template for other big city races to follow.
The masses have spoken. You can either be on the bus or get off the bus.
At least you guys can look forward to the OTs every 4 years. lol Meanwhile, we control everything else.
THIS is what millennials worry about?

No one on this thread has expressed problem with "slow for LetsRun" runners. We've been very clear about that. 2 different people confessed to 25'+ 5K times (I'm one of them) with no consequences. I've had some fun at poor Gladys' expense, but Gladys doesn't exist.
It's not nice to call a person an a-hole, because in the past other people on other threads were rude and said things you did not like.
