I concur. Never should have been dq'd.
That's why you guys would make bad officials. You can't read between the lines like that especially if she was going for a trials qualifying time. In the middle of the race when they were warning her do you really think they should be taking into account her lead which who knows what it was at that point.
I've been in the top three in some small to medium sized Marathons before and I always knew the rules.
The most important rule was the one she broke. Another would have been to have a friend jump in and pace me from 20 miles on. Not that my friends would do that for me because they also know that is wrong and I would be embarrassed to even ask them. I have had friends who were officials at races inform me that their is no way they could tell me what kind of lead I had on the competition or how far behind the leader I was during the race because of the neutral position they held. I also knew that I could not wear headphones (not that I would).
I won a road ultra where I asked one of the officials for assistance because I could not get to my bag at the water station we passed several times because it had been moved. They agreed to help me but I cleared it with them during the race. If you are in a position to win you have to play by the rules.
It's incumbent upon the competitor to know the rules before the event. Honestly, I thought the rule she broke was common knowledge.
