I don't get this. Why are people freaking out about Luke P, Sara Hall, etc. racing a half today when the trials are in a month?

I was under the impression that its tough to run a fast 1/2 marry while you're in full 'thon training mode.

I don't get it either. In fact, I have always planned a half 3-5 weeks before my goal marathons. My half PR came 4 weeks before my marathon PR. Granted, I am a lot slower than Puskedra (pretty close to Hall, but I am a male). It is all relative though, right?
If you need more than a few easy days to recover from a half, you light not be Olympic stuff anyways. I would think that the workouts some of the top guys are doing would be every bit as grueling as a hard 13 miles.

Same here with my hm PR. I agree 100%.
Just letsruners being letsrunners.
Nothing is wrong as long as you didn't adjust your training. Probably should do a 6-8 mile cool down.
I believe it says so on page 42 of the August issue of Runnersworld.

This. As long as these athletes did not lose valuable training by tapering for this race then they should be fine for the Olympic Trials.

That's idiotic. Taking a couple easy days would help most of the runners more than hurt them. Most try to do too much training.

It is only idiotic to those that don't understand the marathon.
The marathon favorites sat this one out.
No Shalane
No Desi
No Kara
No Amy
No Meb
No Ritz
No Jared Ward
No Tyler Pennell
No Bobby Curtis
There is a lot of experienced marathoners that made a conscious choice to NOT race today.
There is a lot of marathoners?

Wow. So ignorant.
A lot of experienced marathoners will not show up at any given race. The prize and especially appearance money doesn't get any bigger if you add more high quality runners to the field.
Those are the people that will be running in Rio. The most experienced American Marathoners.

I think malmo has some experience of his own.
The problem is not that they ran a half-- it's that they ran a FAST half. This shows they aren't properly trained for the marathon.
Nothing wrong with running a half before a big marathon... if you're PRing, you're doing it wrong.

Actually Georgie has very limited marathon success. He actually falls into the list of talented track guys that could extend to the half but not the full. This is the same type of athlete as a Sara Hall who continues to not have a grasp of the marathon.
Sara ran 230 last year, a solid effort, she is capable of running in the 226 range, making the team will be tough though as there are at least four runners that will be very hard for her to beat on race day.

So everybody that ran a slow half today are properly trained for the marathon?
I'm a little cornfused..... wrote:

For those who weren't close to or PRing, yes.

Well in the bizarro world known as LetsRun the slower marathoners know how to prepare for a marathon better than Puskedra or malmo, so yes.

Ironically, I'm not slow and have been around a block a few more times than Puskedra or Malmo.
Nothing wrong with racing a half a month out, but if you're PRing or running close to a PR you're doing it wrong.
