A lot of people have a bad opinion of WalMart because of the documentary:
Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXmnBbUjsPsYou had a nice thread on how a high minimum wage hurts small towns.
Walmart is an example of how small businesses in small towns shut down when they come in.
And they really lean on the employees to get the most out of them with the least pay and keep them under hours to avoid paying benefits.
Then they go on taxpayer subsidized welfare.
I am not totally against them and I understand business and free markets.
I just wanted to respond to your question as why many think Walmart is bad.
High minimum wage....government involvement in the labor force.
Regulations on benefits....government involvement.
Subsidized welfare...gov't
How is Walmart able to build and sell their products so cheaply? Tax breaks from local government and tax breaks from the federal government because of their lobbying efforts. What is the common denominator here? We don't have free markets in the U.S. Not even close.
