This is basically what Im stuck between committing to.
One school is probably the most dominate d2 in its conference. And the D3 one I would basically have the majority of school records in my events by junior year.
What would You choose??

That's funny you're banking on certain improvement.
Also what is D2?

The D2 school guarantees nobody will have heard of it and you'll get a bad education.
But sounds like the D3 school is bad too. So maybe rethink college altogether. That's a serious suggestion. What would you get out of an expensive, poor education?
You should choose the school with the lowest academic standards.

I would prefer to attend the school that will best help me maximize my potential as a runner, while also providing the highest quality education to attain my long-term career goals.
I'd rather win Powerball

"Majority of school records"? Your ego and knowledge of the future should put you as a D1 All American. Go to the school you like the best outside of running. I would probably choose D3.
I guess I'd choose the D2 school since I don't like training alone, and it sounds like you'd be doing that at the D3 school.
But I wouldn't enjoy paying tons of money for what sounds like a mediocre private college in either case.
There are several academically good D2 public universities in California.

Heh. Every year at my D3 school we had guys come in with fast HS PRs. Most of them couldn't keep up and ended up quitting.
Pick the school that better suits you academically and socially. You can get faster or quit at either school.

1. UC San Diego
2.
3.
Spoiler alert. There aren't any good public d2 school unless you like going to college for 6 years while earning your 4 year degree. COMPLETE WASTE of MONEY. You're better off getting an AA at your local jc and entering the real world.
CSU system is broken and terrible. Paying too much for McDonald's quality education.

And lol at "emerging powerhouse." Are those the words of the coach recruiting you? We've all heard that "truth" before.

UCSD, Cal Poly Pomona, San Francisco State, and in certain majors, Cal State Monterey, Chico State, Cal State San Marcos, ( I struggle to acknowledge that there are some good majors at pot head Humboldt State also).
What are the academic options of either school? What is the coaching situation like, training, competition, team, etc.? Pick the school for the academic options and add the opportunity to run XC and track on top of that.
CalTech and MIT are D3. If you get an (engineering) degree from there, who cares if the school records are weak?
If you have a good experience at a D2 school (academics and athletics), that's better than having a bad experience at a D1 school where you may have to make some hard choices between academics or athletics or worse: some majors are too demanding and you can't walk on the team.
A lot of D1 and other colleges have cut men's track and XC for Title IX or budget issues, so there are a lot of excellent coaches who coach at smaller colleges or HS.

If you're at a level where you're options are D2 and D3 you shouldn't be making your college decision based on running. Go to the best academic and overall fit. Reality is you're not going pro in running.

There is nothing wrong with choosing based on running. It is part of the educational experience you're paying for.

Actually there is. College is expensive and if you're going to pay for it you should be getting a good education. As someone who was a D1 runner, running is not a part of the education experience, maybe the college experience. College athletics should not be a primary focus for the student athlete unless they are on scholarship and it is what is paying for your school. Not saying don't train hard and try to run as fast as you can but put things in perspective. Your education can have a huge impact on your future and your athletics shouldn't subtract from that.
Pick the D3. I think its a better fit for your emotional needs based on the way you think as reflected in your post.
