Derrick has confirmed to LetsRun.com that his half marathon race over the weekend wasn't just for kicks and giggles.
http://www.letsrun.com/?p=99517
He's currently training for the Trials where he will race if he's training goes well.
The men's Trials are turning into a must-watch event. Only 10 men in US history with a faster 10,000 PB than Derrick's 27:31.38 have raced a marathon. At the end of the day, the Marathon Trials could include 9 top 15 Americans in US history at 10,000.
Breaking: Chris Derrick, "I am currently training for the marathon trials"

Good to know. Thanks

Yes!!!! Going to be an exciting FULL THON!!!!

Why???? I just don't get this move. He is only what, 24? 25?
He has huge potential on the track and could very well make the team at 5,000m or 10,000m. He has years to make the team in the marathon, why not concentrate on the track events right now? I don't understand these people who jump straight to the marathon. -
Yeah, the Trials are going to be sick. So wide open! You just know that at least one Cinderella story type guy is going to get in.
My picks are Ritz, Puskedra and Estrada. -
Just because he runs the marathon trials doesn't mean he can't run the track trials. He is just trying to give himself every opportunity to make the Olympics. They come only once every 4 years. You never want to miss out.

I wouldn't consider him as anywhere near a lock for the 5k. 10k? That's a different story. Maybe he feels more comfortable giving it a shot this year with the marathon instead of trying to rush into 10k training which could aggravate an injury issue he might be dealing with. If anything, running the trials at 25 will give him a good prep for the future. I also wouldn't call this move "jumping straight to the marathon." He's been running well at xc/track for a few years now. -
Teg 2:12, Flanagan 2:21, Bairu zip. What does Shumacher know about training for the marathon?

Chris Derrick is at least 30sec away from winning a medal in the 10k and does not have even close to the speed to medal in the 5k. Even Galen Rupp knows he can't medal at 5000m.
Derrick's 10k PR means that, with proper training, he should be able to run 2:08 for the marathon eventually. Of course, this means he must train like a Kenyan marathoner, not an American one. -

Which is why Rupp should only run the 10k at Rio. Put all your physical and mental into your best distance. -
Awesome! I really hope he makes it. I think that'd be a great experience for him. I don't think he's too young to run the marathon. It'll benefit him to train for it, and it'll be a great experience.
Any insight as to his current training? -
good for him - I think that is the right move
do we know it is true that he can only run 95 mpw becasue of a specific injury? Someone claimed that but I don't know if it is true.
If it is true, that will be a problem.
Anyone have a list of top american marathon and half marathon performances in 2015? -
Chris is my pick to win the trials. Arguably the best coach and an athlete with the right temperament.
-
This is exciting and will definitely be a good race to watch with so many 'unknowns'. I would love to see Chris as America's next top marathoner. Getting in at an earlier age is only a plus. Not sure why some folks still think you should only run a marathon after you have retired from the track.

Dude, he ran 63:40s, do you know how many guys have done that whom are actual marathoners?? He is not ready to roll with the big boys in 26.2 miles. He is too talented on the track to even be thinking about the trials. Just shows you, jerry is in a rush to get publicity being that most of his athletes have not been performing well and have really become obsolete. Besides, the 8 flat by Jaeger what have they done? German is waaay worse, their other steeplers have done jack diddly, solinksy is gone, derrick hasnt really performed well for a long time, they have no olympic hopefuls in marathon.
Derrick could make some noise in the 10k for an olympic bid but marathon is definitely out of touch. When you are a 27:30 guy and you can't break 62, you are a weak marathoner no doubt -

I hapen to know a thing or two. Ever heard of master bulb? 280 watts of pure bulbage. If i were to predict my man Chrissy's marathon time, I'd guess somewhere in the 1:58:09 - 2:46:35 range. That is based on my calculations from a scientific calculator. Evan ran that 10K in Madrid cuz he thought he can qualify for the Oly trials with a 10K. HAH! But ferrealz, I bet Evan is secretly training for the trials as well behind my back. If this is true, he should probably cut his hair a bit to reduce wind resistence, cuz wind resistence is wind resisting the speed. -

Honestly, this represents very antiquated thinking.
24 or 25 are not young ages for world class runners, even American ones who might be a bit behind some others developmentally. They are at the very least the start of their prime.
Chris has good but not great potential on the track. He probably has good but not great potential in the marathon as well. By which I mean that he is likely to be among the top Americans at either event but may struggle to compete with world elites.
If he wants to stick with the track, he should do that. If he wants to go to the Marathon, he should do that. There is no logical reason to continue running track because "he can do marathons later." This is not what world class runners are doing these days. Of course a large incentive to move to the marathon is that there is simply more money available there than there is on the track. -

anecdotally there is a long list of guys who ran 63 minute halves a month out from a marathon and then ran solid marathons.
We don't know he went all out, but now we know he hasn't been training to run a fast HM - he's been training to run a fast full marathon.
And remember that a 2:12 will probably make the team... -

Jack diddly?? Because a 5th at worlds last year by Huling and a consistently improving (in the event) Bayer is not "jack diddly" since they're both running some of their best times if no pr-ing.
Derrick not performing well "in a long time"? He missed nearly all of last season (and wasn't fully healthy when he did race) with injury, and didn't he get 2nd to rupp in the 10k in 2014 after winning a 3rd straight xc nats? He missed a season...that's not a long time...yeah the other guys have aged and are nearing retirement, but it's not like they're destroying the others careers. I don't call pr's and new best placings at world's as "jack diddly". Maybe you're mo farah and anything but gold is unacceptable... -
this is the best and most relevant response to this thread:
