Just saw this article and thought someone on LR must have known the Running Man that was struck and killed by a SUV.

This should be on the front page. Very sad. The link to the news story video about him was only the previous month as well. Wow. RIP.
-
The article says he even gave blood every 6 weeks while running that much. Wow... RIP
-
Dang. RIP Running man. I agree, this guy should make the front page, he was a Runner.

Who are the Running Mans in your community?
I have a 60 year old woman that I see on my way to work most days. She always wears some 1980s headphones with an entire radio built into a contraption strapped to her head. the rest of her routine seems normal but -

A few years ago there was an older gentleman that I used to pass almost daily on my runs. His shuffle would barely qualify for running but his determination is why I considered him a runner. On the coldest days of winter he would often be the only other runner I would pass. On these days he had a long sleeve white t-shirt with the words "WINTER SUCKS" across the chest. We would always greet each other and shout a word of encouragement.
I actually bumped into him at a bar and we recognized one another. Because of injuries he finally quit running but told me he would give me the t-shirt if we ran into each other again. Sadly we didn't. -

Seems like a pure running spirit. With a lot less weekly mileage, I have run over 50K miles. One wonders what his number was.

Somewhere Flag[pole is preening shamelessly at being "rightt" about the dangers of running on the road.

I don't even know this guy but from what I've read, the dude is totally my hero! Completely independent minded, did his own damn thing, absolutely loved to run and didn't give a $hit what others thought! Smart too, but in his own kind of way - was nobody's fool and nobody's tool. A lot of people simply don't have the will or the balls to live that way; throwing all caution to the wind and just being yourself - the ultimate cool loaner. RIP my friend.
-
rest in peace. What a character, an independent spirit, and an ironman, running 5200 miles per year for decades.
-
Thanks for posting this. I knew nothing about him, but he sounded like a great character. RIP

Unless you are black or actually run over a police officer, you will not be cited for hitting someone in Charlottesville, VA. The police *hate* runners and bikers down here.

Guy was clearly an Autistic wacko with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
-
Oh jeez...so you are saying he was a regular poster here! Double RIP.

So Sad. I am the "girl who runs" in my town. Makes me think of the shirtless men in cutoffs that are always friendly and encouraging on the starting line of local races.

The linked local NBC article gives the location where he was hit.
On Google view, it's a death trap. A double yellow line road that obviously carries a high volume of traffic and has zero paved shoulder room. I have run thousands of miles on the roads myself, but I would never run on a road such as that. Not on the pavement anyway (and the available grass shoulder looks uncomfortably sloped).
I love the guy without ever having met him. Sorry he made that choice. And sorry for the driver involved, which is not at all my usual reaction.

Spend a lot of time in Fort Lauderdale. There is a guy who runs with long hair, and carries a tray with champagne glasses (taped, I'm assuming) to a tray. I always give him props.
Is The Raven still around in South Beach?? -
I agree with poster who googled the location. I lived in Charlottesville for several years. Not to blame the victim, but no way should he should have been running on that road, esp at 7 am when it is still darkish. Let this ne a reminder to be safe out there
