This is basically arguing semantics, but yes someone wants to reduce their drinking or stop completely they should be supported. If you can drink on occasion and limit when you do then you probably aren't an alcoholic, don't need AA, and have instead just made healthy lifestyle changes to drink less which is different from quitting altogether. If you each meat once a week you're not a vegetarian.
