A fair number of college teams have at least one guy who smokes a lot of weed, even during the season. Since there are pretty much no college runners who can't break five, there are plenty in that situation.
I had a sprinter/stoner teammate who ran sub five the one time the coach made all the sprinters run a mile.
Present!
The guy who holds my high school's mile/1600 record-from 31 years ago-by far the oldest record on the wall-waked and baked every single day of his running career
Guess what the time was.........
That's right, 4:20.
.
I got my marathon PR while addicted to the weed, and it's the equivalent of 5:00 ... But I will say, I feel better (most days) not smoking the hooch, even though literally everything seems more boring now. I spent at least a month or more getting dried out (stopping cigs and not boozing much at the same time) and it was really awful. People who don't think the pot is addictive are flat out wrong. Nobody knows because most people don't ever quit.
My suggestion is to do the marijuana on a less than daily basis and keep it special - like enjoying fine wine or a cigar - so when you have to lay off for whatever reason it's easier. There's nothing worse than stressing out about finding or smoking the drugs so that everyday stuff seems better. But you have to remember - to the vast majority of people, everyday stuff is just called ... like, life. Man.
i dont think smoking marijuana has as much effect as people think. I started smoking at 15, by the time i graduated school i blazed every single day. Since i've been 20 or so i've smoked multiple times every day. Im 26 now, started running 2 years ago, and can run sub 5
I haven't run since freshman year Cross Country in High School but I could easily run a sub 5 mile now I smoke off and on well since the end of HIGH School im 35 weed doesn't mess up your lungs but cigs sure do I just quit them on Monday :)
Try sub 2:19:00.

lol im not trying to say im some talented runner or anything. Obviously 2:19 probably isn't in the cards for me, weed or no weed, same goes for most of us
that said an impressive marathon would be easier to accomplish than an impressive mile for a person who smokes would it not?
Wait, what was the question?

In my experience pot hurts the shorter distances much more than the longer distances. But I smoke about 2-3 joints per day everyday. About 3-4 days out from my peak race I'll stop. I'm actually closer to sub 2:18 but I don't want to give any details that will reveal myself.

ah k thats pretty cool. Sorry i took your post out of context and thought you meant like "sub 5 sucks anyways, try sub 2:19 and then you will see weed is the devil" or something
do you smoke before running much? i do basically every time lol, only time i don't is during races (ok turkey trots as lrc calls em). I just enjoy being baked and listening to music while running. Gets me out the door more often then most people and yet i still always hear about how "bad it is for my cardio"
I smoke before all recovery runs. It helps get through the run easier. For workouts I'll smoke beforehand but I'll give myself a couple hours so I'm not feeling lethargic. I smoke joints. Stay away from blunts. Once I stopped with the blunts I went from 1:08 to 1:05 within a year in the half. They've actually done studies that it's beneficial for ultra runners because it helps you mentally get through the run. I partially agree with this but physically it does negatively impact the body. It tightens the muscles and restricts breathing. I haven't had any of these issues yet so I don't see what the big deal is overall. Plus it's my body. If I start having physical issues it'll be my fault and hurt me, not anyone else. Anyone who says all these bad things about it has simply never tried it. I enjoy it and don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

You have not run in 20 years.
You have smoked off and on for 17 years.
You just quit cigarettes this week.
You could easily run a sub-5 now.
Got it.
"You ever run a sub-5 minute mile? You ever run a sub-5 minute mile... on weed?"
Hey, I run the marathon and when others stop for water, I stop for a smoke. I ran a 4:19.59 and I was trying for 420, just too high to pay that close attention.
Hi!
Hey, I am rooting for you! Most people on here are in search of perfection and look into PEDs, but you are keeping it real for all of midnight takers. Break four, nah, leave that to the freaks of nature. Five minute mile for a guy who likes to partake in the good smoke, that's like winning gold at the olympics for us stoners!
Pot is on the list of banned substances. Someone who smokes pot and races is a cheater just as much as any other doper.
I'm sure I'll be attacked for this post but this seems cut and dry. I'm not arguing that pot is good or bad, performance enhancing or not, just that it is a banned substance.
So is any student athlete that does fantasy football, the NCAA has a lot of stupid rules.
