They just need a mile for women now. With Sheila being Canadian they should call it the Emily Carr mile.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_CarrHer point about the mile/1500 is a good one.
Her points about 'old white males' obviously came after she was attacked by a bunch of old white males on twitter, not in relation to the mile/1500 debate.
I'm still waiting for "hilarity" to ensue. Nothing but bitterness - with the occasional rational comment for or against mixed in - has ensued so far.
She did not claim this is the result of a sexist plot. She merely pointed out that the switch to the mile is all about nostalgia, specifically male nostalgia, rather than marketability. There is zero evidence that having the athletes run the mile increases fan support. We run the mile for indoors and yet that hasn't done anything for indoor track and field. In addition, the switch to the mile means that NCAA athletes cannot achieve world championship and Olympic qualifiers for the 1500m in NCAA meets.
Yes she did point out that we weren't thinking about women when making this decision, but that is hardly screaming sexism. Stop putting words in people's mouths.

+1. It's amazing how so many letsruners don't understand how twitter works.

As the periodic thread from "Toni" asks every few weeks, "Why is everyone on this site so bitter?"
She has a right to an opinion, and saying stuff about old white men is kind of funny. Maybe the NCAA should keep the 1500 for the women. No hurt in that. But the letsrun crowd does not like uppity women. They want lockstep agreement with their political and social order. Pathetic little cretins, I laugh at your collective small faces.
That said did she remove some of her tweets from last night?
This whole imbroglio is amusing, but indeed in sort of cynical way.
Who's bitter. A 4:27 hobby jogger shouldn't be making cracks about old men.
Shaheen was faster than her at 51, and some old white men will be faster than her in the future.
And if you run 4:27 you are a hobby miler.
Old white miler faster than Sheila
Old white guy running a 4:12 nostalgia mile:
I'd say this guy has a vested self-interest.

Boom! I have noticed Canadians don't have much passion for the beer 1500.
All these tough, old white guys on the internet would MELT if they met Sheila in person for a pic.
Rojo's take on this is beyond hilarious. It's sad that the brojos run a site this popular and continue to revel in their own ignorance about sport.

Keep the women at 1,500m and move the men up to the mile. The men run a farther distance in college cross country so why not carry it over? Besides, then the sub 4 barrier is just as significant for each gender in their respective races.
Of course we must keep the 1500m mile.
Bring back the 60 yard dash too. The single digit barrier in sprinting is just as significant for everyone.
Suggested changes for "equality" in breaking time barriers:
60yard dash.
8k instead of 10k so sub-30:00 is significant. Call it the 80% 10,000 metres so not to offend anyone.
The only question is how much to shorten the marathon to make sub 2:10 significant? 35km marathon?

Post of the day!
Ah good old first world problems. What happened to when running was fun and not politicized? Is the 1500 female nostalgia because the top women can aim for the 4 minute barrier? Is Sheila bitter or discriminatory towards men? Is LetsRun bitter period(yes)? Seems anything gender related in running draws the attention. Makes a player vouch that there should be an intelligent and independent arbitrator who deletes all the crap off the Internet. Now I know Sheila is smart, but this is pure garbage. As your intelligent arbitrator I hearby delete this whole topic from the realm of Internet conversation and ban the bitter LetsRun low life's from ever posting on The Internet again...
Great post. As another old, white guy, I completely agree with you and some of the others with what she is saying.
It seems like the ones getting all outraged over this are the younger guys who feel like somehow they're being oppressed.
Glad to see some of the more sane folks posting on here on Saturday (as opposed to the ones on this messageboard on Friday night).
It's also funny when they have to resort to ad hominem attacks like "she's just mad because x is faster than her!" Kind of proves her point and makes you all look like idiots.

She was NOT attacked by a bunch of old white men on Twitter. Some people disagreed with her (OH NO) and very few of them were 'old white men'. Her making that remark was unnecessary and flat out WRONG. I'm looking through her mentions right now and most of those that disagree with her are young. A few 'old white men' replied but were civil.
Now she is digging herself into a hole. Her latest tweet is how those that disagree with her "they do hate women".
I've lost all respect for her.
