So why 1500m? Why not 1600m, which just happens to be exactly 4 laps?

Or why not just scrap the 800m and 1500m, and just go to 1000m and/or 2000m, 5000m, and 10000m?

Really, the folks that run the mile are not going to be ready for a 1500? I'll bet the strategy is the same for both events. The extra 100m is not going to change anything for mid distance folks. The only thing it changes is marketability and there are plenty of 1500's available internationally for the elites if they need a certain time for sponsorship, etc... If the folks at home are educated, they will know there is a big difference between 1500/mile times.

I've argued before that tracks should be 500m instead of 400m, and Olympic events should be 100m, 500m, 1000m, and 5000m on the track and 10k and 50k on the roads. A short and long sprint, a short and long mid-d race, and a short and long distance race on the roads.

Good program, except that the 5000 and 10k would have too much overlap in terms of talent. Drop the 10. (Which we should be doing anyway).

Why is this thread back from the dead? I mean, OBVIOUSLY the mile is about male nostalgia, because track was completely dominated by men in the heyday of the mile. I still want to bring back the mile, but it's pretty obvious to me that men have historically raced it much more. (In a proportion not seen in the modern version the 1500.)

Holy christ, what kind of moronic tripe is this? If you can't appreciate the subtle differences between sitting in a pack jogging around for 1400 meter and kicking with sitting in a pack for 1500 meters and kicking, well, just get off these boards.

Is the sub 4 mile even important anymore? Sure, sub 4 is amazing to the average Joe who thinks a 4 hour marathon and 19 min 5k are GREAT, world class times that qualify for the Olympics. But anyone who follows the sport knows dozens of college runners go sub 4 every year (30 just this year). Sub 4 isn't special anymore. But I do prefer they switch to the mile.

Has anyone mentioned that fact that 4:00 men's mile does not equal a 4:00 women's 1500, and that Reid is setting up a false equivalency in her argument?

Frankly, 4:00 mile by a man is slow. It means you're a good D1 athlete, but completely irrelevant above the college level. Breaking 4 won't even get you a good enough sponsorship to live comfortably.

Now contrast that to a woman who runs 4:00 in the 1500. She is an absolute stud, good enough to make the final at a global championship, certainly good enough to earn a healthy living. There's a reason everyone went ape s*** when Jenny Simpson went 3:59 while still at Colorado.

Is there latent male-driven nostalgia at play here? Probably/almost certainly. However, freaking out over something so mundane does a disservice to/distracts from to ACTUAL issues of gender inequality. Rather than suggest (with no evidence) that this would compromise female athletes' marketability (which I can't imagine it would) let's focus on whether the female studs are making as much as their male counterparts. (Due to the notoriously secretive nature of the pro running contracts, I'm highly suspicious they do.)

The ladies want to be equal...... until they are. Then they complain that aren't specially privileged with a shorter race because they are not men. I literally can't even....blah blah blah

I had a dream last night where Sheila and I were running hill repeats in the forest. We got lost as it got dark and an evil-doer came at us. Weird and scary. I guess I have to stop looking at all those trail pics that Sheila posts on her twitter and insta.

I don't know who Sheila is, but she doesn't seem like a nice person. With the sheer amount of self-victimization, you'd think she'd run for Oiselle.

She's a very nice person. Very competitive, though. That's a good thing.

Anyone know her first race and what distance she is focusing on?
