Good for him. If that's his aspiration to break a new barrier. Bravo.
The marathon will seriously challenge his sic, ectomorphism.

Marathon training might even increase Rupp's strength enough to do this.
One drawback to all this marathon talk is I doubt Rupp has ever ran over 15mi. in a single run?
Why on Earth would you assume a runner of his caliber has never run over 90-100 minutes? That's just dumb. I would assume EVERY world class runner with a specialty as long as 10K, REGULARLY does 2 hr+ runs. Two hours isn't even a particularly long run. But it is aerobic building and an endurance staple. You're Welcome.
Carlos Lopes is one who didn't.

Wasn't the consensus his training partners' debut was a disappointment, eighth place? If anything, wouldn't that discourage Rupp from trying it?
Having said that, Mo's going to run the 10000, so maybe the marathon is a good choice if it suits him better than it did for Mo. Mo put everything into that marathon though...
Go for another silver OR take a risk on the marathon?
They may be training partners on the track and relatively close there with Mo an obvious favorite, but results for Mo in a marathon have very little indication of where Rupp will be. Even if they ran half marathons together time and again it still would necessarily indicate where Rupp will go with the marathon because there are other factors coming into play those last 5 miles. First thing is, I believe when Farah is matched or beat he is more apt to really tank it, especially if he knows he's beat from a long way out. Rupp could know he's not going to get 1st or 2nd and yet still run with inspiration and run his best.
I also think Rupp is more economical than Farah. Farah may be more talented over shorter distances but economy is big over 26 miles. For most people a marathon is a massive feat of hard running work, but I think most of those people would consider a typical Rupp workout for 10K a bit of a marathon. Just my thoughts but hopefully we'll see someday soon.
Did Rupp run in trainers? Looked like well cushioned shoes?

I seem to remember reading an article about Rupp's training years ago when he was in Eugene, in which one particular run involved running 10 miles on the treadmill at simulated altitude, followed by 10 miles out on the roads. So if that's true, he's done at least one 20-miler.

I'm sure Rupp is up to at least 110 mile weeks at this point in his career. I doubt he'd be hitting those miles without going at least 14+ on his "sunday run". He was doing around 90 his senior year at Oregon and Salazar talked about Kennedy's advice of having more to put on the plate every year instead of being a high mileage guy early on. Assuming Salazar stuck to that advice and added average of 5 to his weekly mileage every year, he should be around 110-120 now. I don't think they would go above that except maybe for a few weeks here and there.
Bump. Rupp should run the marathon trials
I could see him pacing someone thru the half (or 25km perhaps) at the trials but a gut feeling tells me he will not make his marathon debut with out getting a Marathons Major level promotional fee for it.
I just can't see elfie doing a marathon. Has he gone without a NOPe dope injection for more than two hours since he was 14yo?
